The Nigerian army has retaken the north-eastern town of Baga, held by Boko Haram militants since 3 January. In a tweet from its official account, the army said that “mopping up” operations were continuing.
But who are Boko Haram(BH)?
Here are some facts about them…
Boko Haram are the largest Islamic Jihadist group in Africa and were the most notorious until ISIS pitched up recently in Libya beheading Egyptian Christians. Will the Syria based ISIS look to ‘team up’ with BH? I personally don’t think so. Despite BH displaying ISIS flags and propaganda and citing affiliations with the likes of ISIS… the Syrian based Islamic State have never reciprocated the same dialogue back to Boko Haram.
Without a doubt both entities have separate agendas and I cant really see the benefit of mutual aid. Do ISIS need Boko Haram? ISIS has a core of 25’000-30’000 fighters whereas BH have 6’000-7’000. ISIS is attractive to foreign fighters who travel from around the world to join their ranks (the last estimate is 2’700 Westerners alone are fighting for ISIS) whereas any foreign fighters rushing to swell the ranks of BH are non-existent or negligible at the most.
If ISIS do swell their numbers in the African continent be sure that BH will disappear from our radars as it is swallowed up by the Islamic Caliphate.
