14 of the men in this squadron picture vanished without trace in December 1945 along with their 5 planes. What happened?

From what I know the instruments were being influenced by Earth's magnetic field or atmospheric disturbances and therefore didn't show correct measurements. Odd the the flight instructor didn't notice that or knew of it, but very likely it was already too late when they noticed. One theory puts them as having flown either parallel to the coast line or away from it - that's the only explanation how those planes could have "vanished": running out of fuel and crashing into the ocean...
