SUMMARY-
They lose skis if ordered to Assault/ Advance/ Sneak/ Withdraw (you'll get a warning at the end of the cursor line when plotting).
Also lose them if Pinned or Shaken or taking casualties.
Also lost if enter buildings.
They don't lose skis if Move/ Fast/ Move to Contact/ or if given Split squad order.
Units CAN'T HIDE when wearing skis.

(Note: when skis are lost, units can never get them back)

Below are comparison distances moved in one turn at 'Fast' on Paved rd, Dirt rd, Open ground and Frozen river, the distances vary quite a bit on the different surfaces

They lose their ski's if they sneak or are forced to sneak, not just if pinned i think

Right, I just ran a test to confirm it, and they also lose skis if given the withdraw order.
Incidentally they don't lose them if the squad is given the Split Squad order.
I'll edit this info into the earlier post..:)

Ski troops are the best in all snow games...that is for sure.

Also i think, but i'm not sure that ski troops are painfully slow through the trees

Yes this latest test confirms it, they all started on the green start line on the left, and I ordered them to 'Run' straight through the terrain.
Nobody lost their skis except the poor slob running through the houses who lost his skis in the first house he entered..:)
Woods was slowest, then Pines, then Scattered. The guy in Clear predictably was fastest.
