Jap carrier Soryu circles to avoid being hit by 15 B-17's in Battle of Midway (she was later sunk by Dauntlesses)
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/PoorOldSpike/Photos/soryu-circ.jpg
Caption- "Japanese aircraft carrier IJN Soryu circles to avoid bomb hits from Flight 92, a Boeing (Lockheed-built) B-17E Flying Fortress composite group of the the 31st and 431st Bomb Squadrons, 38th Bomb Group, 7th Air Force; led by USAAF Lieutenant Colonel Walter C. Sweeney, Junior. The enthusiastic but unexperienced B-17E crews claimed several hits, despite attacking without coordination and splitting up their fifteen planes against three targets. While they had several near-misses they did not score any hits. Aerial reconnaissance photos like this one were critical to identifying targets for later attack missions throughout the war. Only the heavy bombers like the B-17 and the Consolidated B-24 Liberator had the range in the Pacific to make long distance flights to gather intelligence. While high hopes were placed in this B-17 attack, high level bombing against ships was shown to not be an effective method."

Earlier in 1939, Imperial Japanese army and naval units continued to attack and push forward into China and Mongolia. Here Japanese soldiers advance inland over the beach after landing at Swatow (Shantou), one of the remaining South China coast ports still under Chinese control at that time, on July 10, 1939. After a short engagement with the Chinese defenders the Japanese entered the city without encountering much further opposition.

On Kiska Island, after Allied troops had landed, this grave marker was discovered in a small graveyard amid the bombed-out ruins in August of 1943. With its gunner visible in the back cockpit, this Japanese dive bomber, smoke streaming from the cowling, is headed for destruction in the water below after being shot down near Truk, Japanese stronghold in the Carolines, by a Navy PB4Y on July 2, 1944. This photo provided by former Kamikaze pilot Toshio Yo****ake, shows Yo****ake, right, and his fellow pilots, from left, Tetsuya Ueno, Koshiro Hayashi, Naoki Okagami and Takao Oi, as they pose together in front of a Zero fighter plane before taking off from the Imperial Army airstrip in Choshi, just east of Tokyo, on November 8, 1944. None of the 17 other pilots and flight instructors who flew with Yo****ake on that day survived. Yo****ake only survived because an American warplane shot him out of the air, he crash-landed and was rescued by Japanese soldiers.
