These are from a trip I took to France in 2006. Since I served as a Ranger, Pointe du Hoc was on the top of my list of places to visit.
The entrance to the site.

The main gun emplacement with the Ranger Memorial on top. Unfortunately the cliff is eroding to the point that it is unsafe to be out here and the area is fenced off to prevent visitors from going out there.

A close up of the Ranger Memorial. President Reagan gave his speech commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Allied landings in front of this memorial.

The site has been left much as it was after the battle in 1944. The bomb craters, though now covered with grass, are still clearly evident.

Some of the German fortifications are destroyed but some are still well intact and open to visitors. The last picture is me standing in a fighting position.

Looking up the ridge from the beach. Looks a lot friendlier and more inviting than it did on 6JUN1944, I imagine.

On the advice of a friend I took some time to visit this cemetary. It is not far from the American Cemetary and well worth the time to visit. As somber as the American Cemetary was, this place was even more so. It is surrounded by trees so it doesn't get as much sunlight and the black marble really highlights the contrast between the two sites.

Beneath this mound in the center of the cemetary 207 unidentified and 89 identified German Soldiers are interred.
