I sent them on 'fast' to deal with a heavy SU that was shelling the academy, but I was too gung-ho and didn't maintain tight 'hunt' formation and got picked off by the SU and its pal. My boys fired back on the move but all missed..

ER Chaser has bottled up my Russkis in the neck of the isthmus for 14 turns and I can't break through.
Every time I try to push my infantry forward, his unseen infantry in the trees around the lake open up pinning them (red fire arrows), and I can only advance inch by inch. I'm tempted to send my tanks through without infantry support but I don't want to walk into schrecks further down the line.

With the end of the game imminent, I go for Andre's airfield by taking the risk of pushing my T-34/85's and halftrack ahead of the slow-moving infantry support, hoping the halftrack will draw the fire of any lurking schrecks/fausts which the T-34's can then deal with. Below- the battle for the coastal village was very brutal, Andre's Germans kept my units pinned in the beachhead for most of the game, note the thin light blue lines denoting a hail of infantry small-arms fire coming in from the flanks.
The tank battle cost him 4 Hetzers (blue circles) and cost me 3 T-34/85's (red circles)
But I later brought in 2 more T-34/85's from the marshes sector to break the deadlock and they can be seen close up to the flag..

After securing the sailing club (bottom), my Russians begin moving on Guderians hills outpost (small grey flag inbackground) but he establishes a blocking wall of 4x Hetzers across my front (blue arrows).
I respond by launching all my armour (3 x T-34/85's and 2 x SU-100's) against them (red arrows)

After a violent prolonged gunfight all the Hetzers are wrecked for the loss of a single SU-100.
My T-34's got some side shots against them which was the deciding factor, while the powerful SU-100's drilled straight through their fronts..

Closeup- whereas T-34/85's can have trouble penetrating a Hetzer's upper hull front, SU-100's usually have no trouble at all as demonstrated here..

I race a pair of SU-100's to have a crack at a bunch of Guderians armour icons near head of the valley in background but run head-on into 6 of his assorted panzers/ Hetzers coming my way.

The SU-100's wipe the floor with them, killing 4 out of 6 for no SU losses.

My Russian advance towards the hills outpost (far background right, among trees) is barred by Seel's gun up on the ridge. I earlier wrecked the Hetzer in a tank shootout, but because the gun is slightly over the ridge my tanks haven't been able to hit it; their shots either fly over its head or impact short on the front of the ridgeline. The gun however can get good shots on my tanks like sitting ducks..

At last I'm able to silence Der Kuenstler's troublesome gun at the hills outpost, just look at the havoc its been wreaking against my T-34's..
My remaining 2x T-34's can't see it (and it can't see them) because of intervening smoke from burning wrecks, so I use the well-known tactic of area-firing into the ground next to the gun (inset), and the blast knocks it out.
(Note the blank panel (white circle) in its datastrip, that's how we know if a gun or infantry unit is kaput)

I reverse the remaining 3 Shermans to regroup, but the Sherman at bottom left keeps on retreating in blind fear, having mis-identified a Pz IV as a Tiger..

Bootie starts a knife fight..
Up close and personal...Bootie hurls 4x panzers into my 4x Shermans vulnerable sides, even a schreck guy is joining in..
When the dust settles, 3 panzers lie dead and the schreck guy has dived down a rabbit burrow but not a single Sherm is killed.
Luckily the stationary Sherms were able to concentrate their fire into the head of the moving panzer column as it came into view.

Sphinx butchers my big Sherman group in ferocious tank battle..
I deploy 7x Sherms and 2x Wolverines in the ville but Sphinx catches them in the crossfire of his panzer groups and rips 5 of them apart, for the loss of 4x panzers.

The Grand Poohbah's killing spree checked at last..
After wiping out half my entire panzer force on the other side of the map, The Grand Poobah now turns his attention to the other flank, advancing 4x Shermans against the flag.
But I counter with a force of 4x PzIVH's reinforced by a Marder and a schreck achieving odds of 6 to 4 in my favour,and in the fierce action that follows all 4x Shers brew for the loss of 2 of my panzers.

Bert Blitzkrieg's Daimler (2-pdr) fearlessly takes on a panzer platoon.
Firing from a classic 'between the houses' position,the valiant car snipes at my panzer column but luckily for me it hit the hull and not the weak turret.
My tanks were on 'Hunt' so they immediately stopped and returned fire, quickly taking out the car.

The buckled and tortured front lines attest to the vicious power struggle that raged, my infantry platoon at the top flag is completely surrounded, pocketed and cut off..
I fought to the last last tank but it was just one of those games we all have from time to time where nothing seemed to go right for me, plus of course DK kept up the relentless pressure giving me no time to gain the initiative..

Having lost 3 panzers earlier (their wrecks lie on Main St below), my last panzer in that sector was garrisoning the ville alone, but a burst of small-arms killed the commander and the panzer was still shocked and helpless when these 3 Shermans arrived and blew it away..

6- Leto gets the win.
A Tiger hit on a Firefly usually meant an instant kill because the heavy 88 shells blew them apart, whereas penetrations by the Fireflies smaller 76.2mm shells weren't so effective, often needing two or more pens to kill the beasts, I felt as if I was having to kill each Tiger twice..

Leto used my own tactics against me to good effect - highly mobile tight tank packs, both of us playing it like a chess game with move and counter-move with evenly-matched forces..

PIC 'C'

1 - Bluehands Tigers assault the village..
2 - I try to reverse my garrison group out of trouble but they're overwhelmed and I lose 3x Fireflies for the loss of 1 Tiger. A surviving Firefly reverses to the rear with damaged gun.
3 - My relief column arrives in position just too late to help the ville group.

I order the column to engage at poor odds (4 against 7 but maybe i'll get lucky)
The decisive tank battle begins and is all over within a turn, I lose all 4 Fireflies for the loss of 3 Tigers, I couldn't beat the odds..

I was the Russian attacker against RNL and these endgame screenshots are viewed from the defending Germans end of the map.
Blue line is final German front line.
My 9x T-34/85's came up the red arrow from the far end of the map like bats out of hell carrying infantry and performed the Starfleet hook manoeuvre to hit him in the rear but ran into a wall of 2 x PzIVH's and 3x 75ATG's and were stopped in their tracks and i lost the game..

My Russian thrust bypasses the small flag and goes for the large one on Der Kuenstler's airfield, but his German small-arms and HMG fire quickly wreck all my flimsy halftracks, and the T-34's are stopped by schrecks and fausts..

1- Stndrtnfhr's heavy assault gun and T-34/85 move up in support of his infantry as they infiltrate the Academy.
2- I send a PzIVH to catch them in the side armour but in the exchange of fire the panzer comes off worst.
3- Meanwhile a gun opens up on my other panzer and Stndrtnfhr has finally pried loose my grip on the academy after 21 turns of relentless assault; this pic now contains 5 dead PzIVH's..

With the game deep into overtime, Huzaar unleashes his Kingtiger into the thick of my defences to hunt down its natural prey- Soviet armour.
It killed the two X'd T-34/85's in previous turns and now it rolls forward to slay the remaining two 34/85's, they see it coming and dive to the left to get side shots on it..

Sitting astride the road, the German leviathan kills a T-34 before the hapless Russian machine can bring its turret to bear.
But note the portentous sight at upper right of a bottle of inflammable liquid sailing out of the trees towards the Kingtiger, one of three that were hurled with no effect..

Backed up by heavy area-fire from my Russian tanks, the infantry swept ahead and seized Mt. Carmel Hills flag at the outpost from the dazed and bleeding survivors, but as the tanks follow up behind, 3 are knocked out by a single gun lurking off to the side..

Two of Herrbixx's Tigers (blue circles at top) have bottled up my Russians in the sailing club (top right), so to break the deadlock I send an SU-100 from the marsh outpost (bottom) in a wide left hook (arrow) to hit one of the Tigers from behind.

It goes like clockwork, this first shot kills the Tiger, but seconds later a German squad runs up behind the SU and fausts it (inset)
(Extreme fow suggests the panzer is a Kingtiger but I think it's a Tiger, it bogged and immobd a few turns ago. The craters and burning vegetation are from my other tanks area-fire in a bid to encourage the crew to abandon but they stayed put)

PIC A- At first my Russian infantry met with only token resistance (x's=destroyed German units) and swept confidently through the flag outpost with their jubilant eyes set firmly upon the rich prize of the airfield in background..

PIC B- Heavy contact! The Russians suddenly encounter 2051472's main line of resistance and are stopped in their tracks as a hail of lead rips through the trees shredding the foliage and upsetting nesting birds..

PIC C
1- A schreck opens up on my T-34/85 and armoured car, while at the same time the ominous sound of approaching tank engines is heard at 2 (it turned out to be a Panther).
3- I reverse my T-34 and car away from the schreck.
4- I pull my men back to defend the flag outpost while telling them- "sorry boys, we just lost the airfield".
5- This Russian group are pinned by heavy small-arms and MG fire from across the clearing and I'm unable to extricate them..
