Battle Brothers -- bloody addictive game

Doing much better. My #1 problem remains money. I currently have a bank balance of C 7183 which is plenty to cover routine costs (and boy is that a mental relief). ATM the problem is that I don't have enough to buy any weapon/armor improvements worth the cost. I'm being a bit tight-fisted I know, but I realize how hard it is to earn those credits Any weapons/armor that might actually be a benefit are just too damned expensive! I'll keep looking.

The good news though is that my battles are going much better. On a map that was mostly flat my 12-man Co. took down a mob of 13 Orcs...without losing a single merc in a LvL-2 battle! Proud of that one. Yes, my tactics are much better, but I suspect my men leveling up and adding perks to their abilities has had a major impact. Most of my guys are now level 6-7+/- and that provides for a much better survival rate.

Doing pretty well...I think. Not having any gaming history to actually base an opinion I can only guess I'm doing OK against the curve. However, have enough money now not to worry about the basics and am now spending chunks of C's to upgrade armor. My man (Terrence the Terrible. Oh, c'mon now! What did you expect?) is armored up enough to be resistant to most Goblin attacks and Orcs no longer are one-hit threats. The rest of the Co. lags behind, but is getting better.

Much better understanding of battle tactics. Just completed my first L3 contract against 15 Goblins. Biggest problem was getting through all the constant entrapments being created by a Shaman of some sort. Found that a mad charge forward is the best tactic against Goblins as their melee capabilities are generally weak. Advance slowly and their archers and hatchet throwers will do you in. Only lost 1 (expendable) L5 archer and picked up C3000. Nice. I hate Goblins, those sneaky bastids!

Orcs I can sort of respect. In your face head-bashers. Brute force all the time. Find good ground and set up spear/shield walls. Let them crash into them and have your 2nd line of crossbows and 2-hex pike/axes do the real damage.

Love me my Wardogs. Enemy loses all sense of purpose when I unleash one. They've saved more than one man when the enemy becomes totally focused on them. Not cheap to replace, but I try to have 3 in my Co. at any given time.

Whoever the developers' AI programmer is should get a raise. I think this may be best AI I have ever seen when the computer is on the offensive. Example. Against the Orcs I was entrenched upon some high ground in the center with both flanks refused. Normal AI would have just senselessly beaten its head against my center line. This time the Orcs split their force equally and went around both flanks! Really? Nice.

Has anyone signed up a recruit that was above a level 1?

Still no sign of any weapon upgrades that seem worth the cost at my current levels. Wish I got the occasional item upgrade worth anything when looting. That's a rare instance indeed.

Hmm. Just after that last, rather optimistic, post I ran into some Orcs with full blown Warrior capabilities, and another big bloke whose name is not shown in my BB data base. Trashed me rather badly they did. And now I've discovered one of my oldest and dearest men is dragging around some permanent wounds that may cause me to have to drop him in the near future. This game is evil.

This game is just evil ... over the weekend played a bit ... on veteran level... my guys were just innocently escorting a trade caravan, then got jumped by TWO gangs of bandits totalling over 26 bad guys, including about a third thugs, rest raiders and 6 archers and 4 crossbowmen ... couldn't retreat because I had a steep hill behind me... fought it out and won, but EVERY single man in my troop was injured, 4 seriously... lost 1 veteran fighter and two rookies ... limped into town... ended up getting only half the fee as most of the caravan were shot down by arrows (and most of the captured kit was all cheap rubbish) ... and then had to spend double in crowns at a temple just to get medical treatment for my worst damaged guys... brutal.

Well, that sounds ugly. I've got a problem with skeletons. I've got to take oot 12 of them for a contract. My slash weapons are ineffective as well as my crossbows agaisnt all that armor. They get a defensive bonus for spears. So I rearmed everyone with as many blunt force weapons as possible. Still got stomped. Half their force is is heavily armored and makes a front row rank. The other half stands behind them with pole weapons and hacks me from 2 hexes out. So far I have not been able to defeat their armor to get to the 2nd rank in time. Wait! That's my tactic!!

So, now I'm gonna rearm my crossbow men and maneuver. Six men will use armor and shields for front line to contact and hold main enemy force. Other six will have my three crossbows and maneuver like crazy around a flank to try to get range/los into their lightly armored pole men before my front line fails. Oh, c'mon! At least it's a plan, which is more then I had last battle.

I still contend this is the best AI I've seen in a pc war game.

For skeletons -- chuck out all all bows and crossbows -- utterly useless.
Axes for taking out their shields essential ... bludgeon weapons work best -- although polearms and skilled swords/falshion-men can do the job as well once the shields are down

The full ancient legionaries with full armour and polearms can do hideous damage.

Bloody hell ... played a bit over lunch today ... my map is getting depopulated fast by Orc and Goblin raids -- got 4 towns left standing to offer normal contracts - -all the rest if noble house stuff.

Picked up a 2 skull contract to go fight some Greenskins up in the snowy north ... got jumped by a force containing 6 full size Orc warriors in full armour -- got out of Dodge as fast as my little feet could carry me.

Next, another 2 skuller to protect a village -- up against FIFTEEN goblins including SEVEN archers with must have been an unlimited supplies of poisoned arrows -- managed to beat them by going at them with shields up (no double-handers), closing as fast as possible ...close run thing -- didn't lose anybody, but ALL my 2 archers, 1 crossbowman and standard bearer got poisoned to an inch of their lives... gotta spend all that loot on medical treatments ... this is getting a little rough out there...
