Alexander's Successors: Wars of the Diadochi - FGM Field of Glory II Campaign (NEW)

And this one brings up a question @Rico. My result was that my "Army staved off defeat until nightfall, but then had to withdraw." I am assuming this means my Army was not destroyed, since I was a far way from the 60% threshold, but obviously my attack on Thracia failed. What is the ruling on this one?

Well played Olaf....no way I was going to assault that hill position! :)

Hmm... never come across this result -- guess we call it a DRAW?

Hmmm the implications of this is that the defender or the attacker can sit on a hill and do nothing. For the rest of the campaign. An attacker can just move in and maybe take a chance, maybe not, ad infinitum. This wasnt a quick raid but a full on invasion.
In a real campaign a strategic retreat would lead to attrition, lowered morale and maybe loss of baggage trains. In a real battle where each side stood his ground this would most likely lead to a day 2 or day 3 continuation. We dont have that implemented so we could in theory try to fight forever but with no outcome. Thats not fair.

Point taken... in the rules I allow for a DRAW (which I know is possible but have never encountered as such) in a PBEM battle.

I guess the real life equivalent to the above result would’ve been both sides retreat to their camps, lick their wounds and resume battle in the morning. (If able and willing)

I’ll make a call:

I would consider the battle inconclusive, basically a DRAW from a strategic point of view, the invading army stays in place and battle resumes next turn - on a new map and new set up as some maneuvering will have considered to have taken place. (It’s all abstracted at this scale)
The province will take 1 point economic damage due to the ravages of campaigning armies.

In this period the onus is on the defending forces to evict the invaders from their territory as these basically can live off the land and slowly reduce the towns and forts by siege and starvation.

I don’t necessarily agree. In this case, my attempt to take the enemy was thwarted and rebuffed. By not getting my army destroyed I managed to save it, but did not succeed in taking my target. Perhaps my army should be disorganized, requiring a reorganization cost, to account for the retreat.
Also, the maps are random......this one was just ridiculously one sided, which is rare. Kudos to Olaf for coming off the hills at the end so we could get some good fighting in, but I don’t see these one sided maps that often. Also rare is running out of turns. That has never happened to me before......in fact not even close.
To be clear, I don’t mind taking on a hill or two, but this was a multi level hill complex......it looked like a castle. An attack against a very similar army (and very good opponent) would have been folly.

But I will abide by any decision......it is all fun anyway.

Well, that is the other option -- your RED army retreats and is disorganised and needs to be repaired.

I agree ... weird one-sided maps are pretty rare in FOG. (luckily)

So if a battle runs out of time and there is no victor (60% or 40%+25%) then the attacking army has to retreat where it came from and the attacked province produces one less resource for this turn?

Also sorry to my opponents: I’m on a surprise field trip. Turns commence on Thursday again.

I think that the attacked province shouldn’t suffer a penalty if they technically won i.e. had a fewer routing %. The attacking army should retreat to their starting province and be disorganized to reflect the retreat.

I tried to send three games today - all of them failed. My internet connection is ok. Now its the enemies turn.

???

Edit: I got one of those turns back and all seemed ok. Hm.

Really good game @Mad Mike!

For about a half second there, when I had you at 38% to 12%, I thought I might be able to pull this one off.. lol. Not quite sure what I could have done differently in this one. Heavy losses on both sides.

Well fought my friend and fun as always!

Me too, we went from an approximately even score to 26 down in almost one turn, I think. That was quite something and I almost would have thrown in the towel at this point.
But then some of the results went my way and that's just how it is sometimes. You can move and position even perfectly, it doesn't matter if this one crucial unit manages to hold for one or two more melee phases. Or another one rallies..
