Welcome to The Few Good Men

Thanks for visiting our club and having a look around, there is a lot to see. Why not consider becoming a member?

California - Back to the 1880's!

@mTk Come to Tennessee. Wife and I will put you up for a few days in our spare bedroom. We have hydroelectric and nuclear power here....that should tickle your fancy! :) We are a little backwards, what with our guns and chewing tobacco and all, but you'll get used to it.

If you have a vineyard or two mTk won't care how backward you are...LOL.

I must say that Nashville is the only place I was out soaking the music up and knocking back bourbon's at two in the morning on a TUESDAY since I got married. Boy, I miss those business trips down there.

One thing I did notice while in Nashville is the extraordinary number of people you would meet after sundown in the bars that had sunglasses pushed up on the top of their heads. Must be Tennessee Haute Couture.

Well, I'm baack!
I'd have been back a lot sooner but getting info as to what the hell PG&E was actually doing was hit and miss at best. They missed the initial cutoff prediction by a full day and the predicted return of power by 4 days. Of course it was the weather's fault. Power in my area was only actually off for 24 hrs. Had they told me that was the time frame I'd just have manned up and stuck it out. We did have a nice trip and Monterey was gorgeous with great dining. However, we ended up being gone 2 days more then necessary. Think $$$.
To absolutely no one's surprise the predicted heavy winds, for the most part, simply didn't materialize but PG&E can always fall back on "We kept you safe" so there's that.
Can't move, can't live here. At least I (still) have a steady supply of fine Cabernet Sauvignon.

Sure, i’ll Just run down the road to Ace Hardware and get everything except for maybe the radioactive bits...

Should give it some thought.
Large fire (10,000 acres) started in Sonoma County (north) last night.
News says unusually BIG winds coming Saturday so I will for sure be down indefinitely then.

It is just crazy. California winds are FAR lower than winds in virtually any other state. But our electrical wires are REALLY fragile for some reason. And we pay the highest amount for electricity of any state in the union.

Look for another huge utility rate increase and the problem not getting solved. This is the "CA Pattern" for water, the homeless, poverty, crime, traffic congestion, etc..

To be (sort of) fair to PG&E its not just the lines. CA rarely gets rain except for 3-4 months of the year, when we get a lot. This spurs massive plant/tree growth. Then comes the loong, dry summer months turning everything into massive amounts of very dry kindling. Then, somewhere, a branch/tree falls on a power line and....

Then you add in the tree-huggers and PG&E's complete and total mismanagement and here we are.

See what happens when you put progressives (formerly known as libtards...) in positions of authority. I'm with Badger73, the further I can get from the right and left coast, the north and south borders, the happier I am. That might be why I am basically in the geographic center (not that far a drive to get there) of the contiguous 48.

Dude, come to Tennessee. We have hydroelectric, nuclear, Jack Daniels, mountains, guns.....

and Lieutenant Aldo Raine.

If I could I'd be there tomorrow.

As it is we just made reservations at a Holiday Inn for a couple of nights starting this Saturday. It's in San Mateo which is right across the hills (aka Santa Cruz Mts) from Montara near the airport. Lots of great restaurants (Izzy's Steak House comes to mind) and cool bars. Get to take long, comfy naps and get in some reading time for my current fav series "Marius' Mules."

Loss of power is seriously inconvenient, but does not necessarily have to be uncomfortable. It's good to be "retired guy."

Ha! I lived in San Mateo for a year after I got out of the Army. Freakin’ loved it. Rented an 1100 square foot apartment in an old building that was awesome, but was 1700 a month.....back in the 90’s! I shudder to think what the rent would be now. Izzy’s was excellent even back then.
Did NOT love the 11 mile yet still one hour commute up 101.
