I'm surprised they didnt kill each other with that shit on top of their helmets... you go first... no no... you... no no... you go first... get that bloody helmut out from under my chin you clown...
 
The Pickelhauben was made from leather but as WW1 progressed Germany began to run out of leather stocks so made helmets from anything they could find... thin steel, pressurised felt and even paper. As you can imagine they were virtually useless and so in 1916 they started making the Stahlhelm (the German helmet we all know) and this in itself decreased head wound fatalities by 70%.
