The waves on the North American Great Lakes have much shorter and more intense "chop" than their saltwater cousins. Really adverse conditions greatly exacerbate the peril. Tragic indeed.
 
Being a Canadian that song by Gordon Lightfoot is etched in my brain. He's one hell of a songwriter.
 
One of my favorite ballads. A lot of people don't realize just how many ships rest on the bottom of the Great Lakes. Conditions can get dangerous fast. RIP crew of the Edmund Fitz.
