Battle Brothers -- bloody addictive game

Short version...things are getting a bit better. I had to figure out some way to deal with Orcs. ATM I was in a battle I just could not win, and every body dying was unsatisfactory.
What to do. No tactic I tried worked. Armor was inadequate to withstand Orc Warriors for long. Weapons either missed or blows were laughed off. Easy choice as only option was better weapons. Better armor would just mean I might die a bit more slowly and I had no other tactics left to try. Spent a LOT of Crowns on that two-handed hammer I lusted after and armed everyone with armor effective axes. So with 3 crossbows, 4 spear men, 4 axes and my hammer off I went once again. Orcs don't like axes and hammers. My spearmen gave me time to employ my new weapons and down went the Orcs! Even crossbows were effective after hand weapons broke Orc shields. Boy, did I feel better.

So, I agree to escort a caravan for C1500 and get hit by 15 brigands of all sorts. No serious problems and new weapons very effective again. No one killed, but some notable wounds. A very short way down the road I get hit by 12 more! Again, my Co. puts up a great fight and again we get through with no deaths! On down the road and heading for our destination, yep. You guessed it. We get hit again by 15 more brigands. Bemoaning the loss of the C1500 we flee the scene. Had enough loot to partially make up for the loss, but rep takes a hit. Still, everyone is alive and I now have a decent chance against Orcs. Yes, just a little bit better.

I may have come to the end. I simply cannot complete any L3 contracts anymore. Just too many bad guys with troop quality better then me. Case in point. Contract called for saving a down from being destroyed by Ancient Dead. Oookay. Ran to the town and joined battle. There were 12 Ancient Auxiliary and apparently a Necromancer I never found. Although by head count there should not have been one. Lost to resurrection. Tried again. This time 15 Auxiliary but no Necro showed up so got through that without loss of men. More story text and then with no time for any R&R a second attack! This time by 8 heavily armored Ancient Legionary and...I won!! Lost 3 men though that I really couldn't afford to lose. While I was thinking about whether I should just proceed anyway wait for it.....a THIRD attack by 15 Ancient Aux. Withdraw. Quit. Turn off PC. Go to bed.

So, after that debacle went back to prior save. Took L3 contract to raid & destroy Brigand camp. Figured that is something I could do. Attacked camp with 15 Brigands. Not too worried. Long battle, but doing OK. It was then that I discovered there was a Necromancer (I think) in their ranks and they were fighting each other! WTF!? They kill him. Next turn he pops up in the middle of my rank and resurrects two Brigands! All downhill from there. Now that was really strange.

I am on turn 230 and I fear these developments are due to the AI thinking my Co. should be a lot better than it is by now. I would start over, but simply cannot see how I would do anything significantly different that could provide for a great improvement in things. Not giving up yet, but it may be coming.

The game developers have a wicked sense of humor... you know you're about to have a tough morning when you get jumped by a "plethora" of anything....

How large is your roster of men ... in later game getting to 20 and have enough reasonably skilled "arrow catchers" to rotate in and out of that front line as needed is quite useful.
Although the wage bill overheads become quite hefty then...

Only 13 but not enough C's to pay for men to just sit on the bench. Are we always stuck with a max of 12 active fighters?
I've found (ATM) rotating low level arrow catchers usually just gets them killed, they don't help in the fight and I have to pay more Cs to hire new ones.
Won that Brigand L3 contract. When I killed them they usually resurrected as undead combatants. Never read about that before.

Yes -- you always have max 12 guys to a battle ... I often take lower paying quick contracts to "blood" the new guys and give them extra experience and hopefully upgrade (especially fatigue fitness to carry more armour and wield heavier ewapons) ... and give vets a rest.
When you have undead plague, at some point ordinary guys you kill can come back in a battle as zombies even without necromancer on the field ... beheading helps :)

Haven't read the entire thread, but for those of you who play this and Darkest Dungeon - which would you consider to be the best game?

They are both very, very good. Darkest Dungeon is more unforgiving as there is no reloading previous saved games (there is no save feature). This actually caused me to suspend playing DD a few months ago, because I had a full roster of leveled up characters with nice equipment and didn't want to risk losing any of them. The final dungeon is unbelievably difficult, and you are guaranteed to lose a character (permanently, of course) even if you retreat. I do plan to get back to it when I get my nerve up.
