California Burning

9 billion in damage claims and counting...oh my! That would pay for a lot of forest management...just saying...

The problem in the Netherlands is a bit the same although with us it is about water. High water.

Most of the problems are human related (and I don't even mean the climate change): we build homes where there shouldn't be any. But living near a river is so nice, looking at the passing ships etcetera. And living in the woods is so nice, just don't axe all the trees.
But when there is high water and your house gets flooded living near a river isn't so great anymore. Then we start bitching on the authorities because the dykes are too low etcetera. Of course the local authorities are indeed partly to blame: they shouldn't have given permission to build houses so near a river.

You see the same things here with hurricanes. It's lovely to live by the seashore until the hurricane hits. You would think the government would tell folks "Hey, no building on the barrier islands." but not going to happen.
