Gotta love BF. You wouldn't know the CMBN 4.1 patch was even available if all you did was read their home page. Maybe I missed it, but think not.
Good news is I was able to patch w/o throwing my monitor out the window. This means everyone should be able to do so.

Anyone note German Gebirgsjäger squads have every member with smg nameed as commander? so some squads have 7 commanders. Clearly an error

Can anyone jog my memory on the proper method of patching if you are currently playing a PBEM?

If I remember correctly, Player 1 saves the game during the command phase, patches, reloads game, finishes the command phase, sends turn to Player 2, who patches before loading turn. Is that correct?
