Re: Father Christmas / Santa Claus

In the Netherlands traditionally we celebrate the birthday of Sint Nicolaas (Saint Nicholas or Sinterklaas, as he usually is called) which is the 6th of December, by giving presents the night before on the 5th. According to the story, he comes in an old steamer from Spain where he lives. He arrives in Holland at around the 20th of november (which is always broadcasted live on national television). Very politically incorrect he has a black helper, called Zwarte Piet (black Pete) and a white horse which he rides on the rooftops at night when distributing the presents.

As Zaraza said, the roots of this person are the bishop of Myra.

I like the fact that Sinterklaas is celebrated on a different time then Christmas, so the true reason why Christmas is celebrated isn't diluted by the getting-presents part.
Instead we have two great celebrations !

I must add though, that especially among non-christians and older people without young children, the presenst-giving part during Christmas is growing.

The coca cola link is that up until coca cola really started getting going in the early 1900s santa wore green until a masterpiece of marketing was achieved and they changed him to wearing red.
