Hello I have read a similar post in the combat mission forum but I would be interested to know what you are saying ... What are your tricks or tips to make combat mission easy, more convenient and improve your game. I'm glad about every message. Let it out :)

In reality, practice, practice, practice. You can learn, but the game is impossible to master.

Yeah back to the op... play with yourself! No I’m not talking about when your watching porn. :D But play hot seat by yourself to get a feel for spotting, suppression effects, movements, etc. Also never under estimate terrain study, especially from both sides in H2H. Getting a feel for possible enemy plans and the flow of the battle is key. By flow I mean, when will the enemy arrive here or how many turns will it take me to get to point A etc.

On a serious note, one thing I had to learn is to go slow when attacking. Rarely does rushing forward turn out well. The exception to this is sometimes it is beneficial to rush VLs in meeting engagements.

Panthers and Tigers are awesome tanks, but they are not invulnerable.

Practice and "git gud" with direct firing onboard mortars.

Unbuttoned tanks spot much better than buttoned tanks. Just be prepared to lose tank commanders. Note this doesn't really apply to modern CM.

Try not to bunch your guys up. Split squads and spread out. A mass of soldiers is just a big juicy target.

Halftrack gunners have short life spans.

That's all I can think of on one cup of coffee.

If I can give just one piece of advice, it's this:

When playing single-player, never, ever reload a savegame just to "fix" a mistake you made. If you really screw up, it's either keep going or restart the mission from the beginning. Live with the consequences of your decisions and learn to pull through.

This teaches you the hard way to make fewer mistakes, but just as importantly, it also gives you more mental strength to keep playing even when you take casualties.

It's very easy to lose heart if something goes wrong early on, and then become reckless, either hoping for a stroke of luck or simply wanting to finish the game as fast as possible without actually surrendering. I see this all the time when playing PBEM, and it's very obvious when an opponent loses the will to fight and starts throwing his troops away. It's no fun for either side.

Lots of good advice here but this is huge. If you keep recovering from your mistakes you will not learn to be resilient after making them. There is a lot of satisfaction in succeeding in these games but none so great as succeeding after a disaster and turning the game around when your opponent figures you are done. But you cannot experience that if you keep resetting the pieces or giving up and surrendering.

Since this thread has taken a slightly more sensible turn, here are some things I have picked up playing against a human opponent in an urban environment (this has been copied from a post I made on the BFC forums):

1. Keep tanks mobile - infantry will seek cover if a tank has LOF to them, to overcome this keep your opponent guessing as to where the tanks will reposition. Do not stay too long in one place so that AT assets can be brought to bear on you.

2. If you are infantry vs tanks, then move behind buildings so as to be out of sight of the armour. Try and predict where your opponent could move to next turn and get those units that would be in LOF into cover ASAP.

3. Use lots of smoke! Use it to conceal manoeuvre and to blind enemy guns/armour. Frustrated opponents may expose their tanks to attack by trying to get through or around the smoke. Mortars are excellent for this.

4. Manoeuvring without concealment or cover fire is suicide.

5. When opportunities present themselves, take them if the pay off is worth it i.e. casualties vs objectives.

6. Use large calibre artillery for prolonged periods. Urban environments allow good protection from indirect HE, so go big and go long.

7. SMGs are excellent for 'sweeping' the enemy out of your house and off your doorstep.

8. Don't chase armour with infantry AT assets, you will lose. Let them come to you.

9. If all else fails, use the nukes!

When attacking a position/building/trench, area target with a support team, LMG's, MG's, mortars etc....
Give the assault team (SMG's etc..) movement orders and on the second last waypoint give a 15 second 'pause' command and a 15 second 'fire briefly' command with area target (make sure the distance is under 30 meters so the assault team can use grenades) the put the last waypoint on the position/building/trench.

Now, here is the trick.
Make sure the assault team has a 'pause' command on their starting position (after all the movement and 15 second target command has been given).
Lay smoke between the assault team the the target, even on the target is good, once the smoke starts to do it's thing unpause the assault team, they will move and shoot through the smoke without having to have LOS, it has saved my pixel troupen lives on several occasions.

Now that was clever. I learnt something new :)

Beware ! CM WWII tactics may NOT be valid with CM Modern tactics..... and vice versa

Few tips about CM Modern tactics:
1) If you are spotted you die
2) The firepower of any single unit is massive in comparison with WWII units
3) Move faster, hide better, shoot quicker, be smarter
