Wow! What a great web site. It's a credit to Bootie and you all for your contributions, and evidence of a very active gamers' community. Yes, I "lurked" a bit before joining, but the more I "lurked" the more I liked what I saw.

So who am I and what drew me in?

First, my gaming interests. I'm a long-time board-gamer of wargames, cutting my teeth on ASL and enjoying that system for years. Then I moved on for a while to explore operational level games like OCS - Case Blue, Tunisia and some DAK II. I've also played some Ancients boardgames like GBoH, Alexander the Great and SPQR. My preference remains for the tactical level games. Currently I'm playing Jim Krohn's fast playing Band of Brothers WWII tactical system. I'm also playing GMT's Counter-Insurgency game on Vietnam - Fire in the Lake.

I've had an interest in history, especially military history for many years. I'm a recently retired "civil" servant of the UK Government. One of the reasons I enjoy wargaming so much is the intellectual challenge it gives of pitting your wits against those of your opponent as you try to gain the upper-hand. While I enjoy a win, I play more for the tension, struggle and fun of the experience. And another reason I enjoy boardgaming is the social side - the banter you get when you sit down and play-face-to-face.

I dabbled a bit with Combat Mission three of four years ago but I found the single-player option lacked challenge, though it was good to start that way. At the time I had one CM opponent but he dropped out of the gaming scene and I lost the CM thread. Recently my son persuaded me to go for Apple TV and I started watching Combat Mission on YouTube. That's when I came across those fine video AARs by Double and Ithikial, which led me here. Hey thanks Double and Ithikial!

After a few days of reading the threads on your forums, and watching more CM videos, I've downloaded the latest versions of CM: Fortress Italy, Gustav Line, Normandy and Market Garden. No doubt RT will follow soon enough. Now for a few single-player missions for a refresh before going for some H-to-H game play via your game play forum. Give me a week or so and I'll be looking for some PBeM.

Thanks all.

Well thanks for a warm reception. I especially agree with Hedgehog that:

"You will find a lot of interesting people here, who are sharing your hobby and we are proud of being far more than just a platform for finding war-gaming opponents."

Welcome to one of the best gaming communities on the net; Great bunch of folks (even if some of us are a bit "cracked around the edges") who play well together and concentrate on fun.

Hello Brendan,

welcome to THE FEW GOOD MEN!
Good to have you with us! :)

Joining this community was the right decision because Combat Mission is at it's best when played head to head (H2H)
- as you already said. ;)

For to get involved into the PBEM H2H gaming action, please go to the gaming section and choose the category with
the game that you'd like to play (CMBS or CMBN etc.). There you'll find the postings for gaming requests
(just scroll down a little). And there you may also start your own, of course. ;)

Enjoy the club and become a part of our community - there are many reliable gaming partners here, plenty of stuff to
check out and good people to meet.

Welcome BC!

I just welcomed Sgt Grunt who is from Gloucestershire on the west coast, only fair we now head over to the east coast.

As I said on Sgt Grunts welcome one of the things I enjoy about welcoming people to the club is seeing where they live and broadening my knowledge of other places, learning of geography and world history.

So thanks BC for adding your location.

Chelmsford tidbit:

“Early history

In 1199, following the commissioning of a bridge over the River Can by Maurice, Bishop of London, William of Sainte-Mère-Eglise was granted a Royal Charter for Chelmsford to hold a market, marking the origin of the modern town.”

- 750 years later American paratroopers were dropping on William's church.

And a Chelmsford – Long Island common bond:

“In 1899, Guglielmo Marconi opened the world's first "wireless" factory under the name 'The Marconi Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company' in Hall Street, employing around 50 people. The company was later called the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company Ltd. For this reason Chelmsford is credited as the "birthplace of radio", and this phrase can be seen on administrative signs on major roads entering the city, although this statement is disputed.”

We too here on Long island have preserved a bit of Marconi history:

…..The small building is approximately 10 feet by 10 feet, and was originally located in Babylon town near the corner of Virginia Ave. and Fire Island Ave. Guglielmo Marconi used this small building for training wireless operators and for beaming wireless messages to ships at sea.

The small building, as well as a Victorian country house at the Babylon property comprised the residence and school which was responsible for teaching the Marconi Method of wireless communication, the premier method of the time. The facility first became operational in 1902, and contained a 210 foot mast which allowed the station to broadcast to a 200 mile radius.

That's probably more information than you wanted to know but, again, welcome to the club.

Well, thanks again to all of you for the warm welcome. Also thanks to Gunner for his Chelmsford research.

One old gentleman I spoke to recently has memories of GIs stationed here in WWII. The council decided to lay on night buses on Friday and Saturday nights to transport GIs back to their bases after the dances had finished for the night.

Why? Well up until then, GIs were spilling out of the dance halls, with girls on their arms and merry with drink. With no way back to base, they had been 'borrowing' dozens of cars from the locals to drive haphazardly back to base. Apparently several cars would be found in the following morning, embedded in hedges with snoring GIs still locked in the embrace of their 'girls'!
