I wouldn't call it superior knowledge, just a veterans reflection on his own experience.
The American 'steel pot' was virtually useless against anything but small shrapnel, unlike the modern day kevlar version. Though to be honest when we switched to kevlar, I missed having a wash basin available at all times.
