When you get these scenario's with a Exit point for your equipment, how do you play the game do you fight it out and use the exit area if things are going bad, or make your way through the exit zone from turn 1.

I think it depends on many factors,
1) When I load the map and have to see how many Exit points there actually are.
2) Then determine what tactically what exit point is best suited to fight towards, based on terrain and recon/scout objectives.
3) I usually fight it out towards a main exit point, but will usually fight a smaller skirmish towards a second exit point if I can see if that one is less defended.
4) But basically I like to fight it out win or loose.

Depends on the scenario....sometimes you have units that get points of exiting others not....so they stay to fight till the death.
