The Island War: The Rico Reich vs The Republic of Gunn

The two battles have been completed ...

tDs7Hyq.jpg

In the CENTER BATTLE, Infanterie Regt 102 repulsed the Gunn Army assault -- General @Bootie called off the attack by 1st Armoured and 2nd Infantry Brigades, pulling back after suffering losses of 2 Shermans, 1 Stuart, 1 Priest SP gun and a Scout Car and about 62 personnel casualties.
(None of the losses severe enough to cause a strength step loss to his attacking units)
Well dug in, with effective artillery and some air support, the defenders lost 27 casualties, none of their five AT guns were lost -- no step losses incurred either.

In the SOUTHERN BATTLE -- the Gunn Army attackers won this one by sheer weight of naval artillery gunfire and air attacks, breaking through the border defense line.
After suffering some painful losses, the Rico Reich Panzerbrigade Faust and Infanterie Regiment 104 decided to withdraw from the obviously inadequate border defense positions along the coast to preserve their force.

Reich casualties were 1 Pz IIIn, 1 Heavy Armoured car, 2 haltracks and 2 Flak halftracks and 99 personnel casualties.

Infanterie Regiment 104 suffered enough losses to cause a strength step loss.

Gunn army losses were negligible -- no aircraft were shot down either.

In the center battle, the Rico Reich army has its first Iron Cross candidate
Even with his entire gun crew dead or wounded from artillery fire, Gefreiter Otto Falk keeps manning and firing his 75mm PAK at enemy tanks and vehicles.
He may even have knocked out an enemy Sherman tank -- too much dust & smoke to confirm at this point -- in the picture, General @Bootie 's tanks are clustered in that cloud of dust & smoke off on the left, with the smoke from the destroyed Priest SP gun on the right.

The TURN 2 Rico Reich moves will follow shortly! The war is truly afoot!

The TURN 2 Rico Reich moves have been plotted -- no ground battles in this phase, but hell breaks loose at sea around South Point.

Rico Reich orders & moves (from north to south):

1. Fallschirmjaeger Regiment Ramcke moves to a back stop position on the Danya river at the village of Grinzing.
2. PzGrenadier Regiment 11 moves south to reinforce the defenses before Parkstadt.
3. Panzerbrigade Faust is withdrawn from the southern front and transferred to the central sector at Kolsch.
4. Newly mobilised PzGrenadier Regiment 44 becomes active at Linz.
5. Newly mobilised Artillerie Abteilung 2 becomes active at Parkstadt.
Naval & Air Attacks:
1. The Rico Reich naval units RRS Pelikan and RSS Seewolf sortie to the South Point area and attack the Gunn Republic ships in Southdale Bay.
2. The Rico Reich Luftwaffe makes a maximum effort to attack the Gunn Republic ships.
3. The Gunn Air Force scramble all available fighters to intercept this attack and protect their naval assets.

The Battle of South Point might just determine air and naval supremacy for one side or the other for rest of the opening phase of the war.

We start with the AIR BATTLE:

The Gunn Air Force deployed in force to protect their naval colleagues from the Rico Reich Luftwaffe, and they did a sterling job -- not a single enemy plane managed to get through to the ships.

A heavy price was paid by both sides, with the Rico Reich Luftwaffe coming off slightly worse.
The Gunn Air Force had the two single strength units from the Douglas Bader aerodrome destroyed.
The Rico Reich Luftwaffe lost one two-strength unit from the Richthofen staffel destroyed and another unit from the Boelke staffel losing one strength point.

All surviving air units broke off contact and returned to base.

The NAVAL BATTLE didn't go so well for the Gunn Republic Navy.

Superior gunnery by the Rico Reich crews resulted in ONE hit point damage on the GNS Tigershark and TWO hit points damage on the GNS Dolphin -- both vessels breaking contact under cover of smokescreens and returning to Nathanville for much needed repairs -- GNS Dolphin limping back to base, severely damaged, with one strength point short of being sunk.

The Rico Reich vessels did not escape unscathed, with RRS Pelikan sustaining ONE hit point damage -- but definitely a victory in the opening naval skirmishes.

The situation map at the end of this phase looks like this:

We are ready for the second phase of TURN 2 -- we await the orders and counter-moves by General @Nathangun

General @Nathangun 's Republic of Gunn moves for Turn 2 have been processed... and here's how it plays out, north to south.

1. A two strength Gunn Air Force unit mobilises at Douglas Bader aerodrome.

2. 1st Para Brigade deploys to the front from Locksfield to Wheatsborough.

3. 1st Armoured Brigade disengages and joins 3rd Infantry Brigade in an attack on the Grenzdorf fortified border positions manned by Infanterie Regiment 103.

4. 1st Mech Brigade and 7th Border Brigade pull back to the Republic of Gunn border positions at Southdale.

5. The two full-strength air units from Keith Park aerodrome attack the Rico Reich Navy units off South Point.

In response, the Rico Reich Luftwaffe flies support missions for the Infanterie Regiment 103 - leaving the naval units to fend for themselves ... recent heavy aircraft losses are now starting to limit air operations quite a bit.

Battle for South Point (part two):

The Rico Reich Navy ships get lucky and weather the enemy air attack quite well: no damage to either ship, and RRS Seewolf manages to shoot down one strength point of an attacking Gunn Air Force air unit.

Starting up the only battle of this turn -- seeing it's only one battle, @Nathangun and I will be fighting it.

Battle for Grenzdorf:
Large Allied attack during the day, medium farmland & village map -- rolling terrain.

Gunn Republic Army forces:
1st Armoured Brigade: 1500 pts Armour Only & 1200 pts Mech Inf Only

3rd Infantry Brigade: 1000 pts Infantry Only

Rico Reich Army Forces:
Infanterie Regiment 103: 1000 pts Infantry Only
Border fortifications: 1500 pts bunkers, trenches, barbed wire and mixed mines
Luftwaffe support: 3 x Me109G's -- heavy, light or strafing ... max points 3 x 264 points

Without the artillery support from Artillery Abteilung 1, this is going to be a tough ask for the defenders.

In the book "Soldiers of Destruction" there is a similar RL story of an SS AT gunner that stayed firing while all others were dead around him.

Better ramp up Iron Cross production, because I see that happening all the time in the game :)

The Battle for Grenzdorf is finally under way... scouts have been reporting large numbers of Republic of Gunn Army tanks and infantry advancing... first enemy mortar barrages are falling.

Can Oberst Bahr's Infanterie Regiment 103 survive this relentless onslaught by overwhelming enemy forces?

The first Luftwaffe attacks are going in in the face of fierce enemy AA fire ... and the first pillar of smoke from a destroyed enemy tank is spotted rising into the sky! So far, so good.
