WarHammer 40K Sanctus Reach - anybody try this?

#4
It does look good, doesn't it? Will investigate further.

Well, I did and decided it was worth spending $29.99 out of this month's entertainment budget to see more. Developers say they will continue to work on it and DLC can't be too far behind.

OK, did the tutorial and like what I see. UI is very friendly. First impression is a bit of screen info overload, but playing a bit more should take care of that. Very nice to look at and the scroll/zoom works just fine. You could do worse. A little surprised they went with squares rather than hexes.

I've bought it on release day and loving the game! I'm working on learning the editor so I can host a small tourney based on the tabletop version.
I also jumped in and bought it -- haven't had time to do more than kick the tyres and a couple of intro learning battles.

Played a few of battles last night - easy to play, but steep learning curve, easy to underestimate those Orcs - don't let them close in and take out their flamethrower guys asap. Don't scatter your guys - it's very tabletop stylists - so weapon ranges and movement quite small it seems.

2nd battle went well. That is the secret. Do not ever let your units get isolated without nearby support. The Orcs will make you pay dearly for that mistake.
A "gamey" tactic I discovered is to mount your vulnerable units on a Rhino APC, move the vehicle into a firing position, dismount the (say, Melter Unit) -- get your shots off and then immediately remount them.
Seems to work.

This should be interesting to play vs a human Orc opponent -- they would play play slightly less "stupidly suicidal" than the AI.

Oh, my. Just started my 4th battle of the Stormclaw Campaign. My OOB options have changed dramatically. Now it is loaded with heavy units of all kinds and lots of vehicles. Battle length has increased from 7 turns to...20! That means the Orcs probably have... Must say I sure like what I've seen so far. Have just about got the game mechanics down pat and don't have to consult the info screen re unit capabilities nearly as much. Learning new tactics every battle. This battle has got me intimidated just a wee bit. o_O

I think I'm prepared to announce Warhammer 40000 Sanctus Reach gets an easy "mTk Seal of Approval". Take it for what it's worth. You could do worse (and probably have).

OMG! It's around turn 7 or so and it's been a continuous wave of Orc attacks. No breathing room whatsoever! For the most part they aren't completely stupid, but quality can win out over quantity if properly organized.
What I've learned:
1 Patience. On the first turn do not move forward. The Orcs will reach you without any help from you.
2. During set up move all your troops together in a defensive perimeter with over lapping fire zones if possible. Don't leave a unit or two on the flanks "Just in case". A circle has no flanks.
3. You can inflict "friendly" fire casualties so be careful with LOS.
4. First few turns the Orcs will attack piecemeal if you let them for easy kills. Let them.
5. Don't assume killing the first wave of Orcs means your job is done and now you can move forward.
6. Your hovercraft on hilltops are deadly. They can shoot & scoot almost with impunity. And you know how painful that can be.
7. The Wolves have some awesome units.

Sounds like we're just about ready for a Multiplayer PBEM skirmish vs human opponent -- happy to take the Orcs if necessary ;)

@Rico Not yet. I just lost the "Escort the Rhino Off the Map" for the 4th time. Once because I badly underestimated the time it takes. Once because I forgot to check how many turns were left. And twice by coming up one SQUARE short before time ran out. In my defense both times it said there were 2 turns left and then there were none. Have not figured that one out yet.

Won that one on 2nd attempt -- hint: go hard left immediately and sneak through left side valleys (keep most of main force clear of thos ecentral ruins) and keep a screening force close on your right in middle of map, with the fliers on the high ground. I kept the Rhinos grouped close together for mutual support.
