December 10th 1665 by order of the States of Holland and West-Friesland a "regiment of the navy" was raised. Its motto: "Qua patet orbis". Which means something like "as wide as the world"

Among its early battle honours are the raid on the Medway in 1667, the capture of Gibraltar in 1704 and the battle of Camperdown in 1797.
