Gentlemen, time to select your initial OOB. Can't do much else until you have gone shopping and are able to provide me with the tokens for the campaign map to match your selection.

If there are any general questions please see section 2.0 of the rules in the dropbox folder about unit selection. Anything further please post them here or in your respective HQ's if you think it's sensitive to your plans. (Your HQ's are now open but also secure).

Is anyone else having problems with the Excel worksheet? It's an .xlsx file which is a plain Excel 2010 file. Older versions of Excel may have a problem with it.

Excel works fine for me. I've got to go - getting nagged by the wife as a write this, but we'll have something soon!

@Ithikial

Do we have to choose our entire 65k force and out of those 65k we get our 20k units for day1?
And leadership is also set to typical?

Up to you. However only the first day's worth of purchases needs to be with me ASAP to get the ball rolling. Would be wise I think to talk about day's 2 and 3 as they get a little closer and the situation at the front starts to take shape.

Both sides have three OOB sheets, one for each day to keep each set of new purchases separate and easy to keep track of based of the day of their arrival in the campaign.

A few questions:
1.Just to get it right: the 5000 points max for off-map artillery and aircraft is part of the overall purchase points, right? These 5000 are not additional.
2. As units like a battalion should be bought with typical settings then there is a slight problem with the costs of each of these units. They are randomized and can vary to quite large degrees on the costs. For example a Infantry Battallion may cost 2414, the next one with typical settings may cost 1956, and the next 2567. Depending on the random quality. How do we achieve nearly correct numbers?

1. Yes it's part of the overall purchase. No purchasing of aircraft. Look at your OOB excel sheet, and the rules - it's done for you. :)
2. Must admit this is already causing a bit of head scratching. Bit of teething problems. That's a lot of variance in points and there's no way to replicate that in the Editor perfectly. There is an alternative which we'd need to agree to now and that is everyone starts with Regular troops and I throw in a few extra Action Cards to mix up the OOB a bit after OOB construction is done. The problem it gets touch unrealistic not having a mix of troop quality within units. If most of us are cool with this though I'll update the rules and the Action Cards.

1. Thanks this all has been done for me ;). Joking aside, I really appreciate all the work that has gone into this. And yeah I read it in the manual and was sure aircraft-wise but with artillery I was just about 90% sure. I think this is maybe caused by beeing a non-native-english-speaker. Better safe than sorry.
2. Maybe I have another proposal. I also experimented with this a bit so maybe this helps. I am fine with using typical settings, although there will be some variance in the overall points then, as the results from the QB menu don`t match in the scenario editor. But spread over 65000 points this should even out a bit. If you ask me: Stay with typical settings (even if one side is slightly favoured). This adds atmosphere and realistic feeling and therefor fun. But I think we have to use (if not intended) Core unit files. That way all settings of units are the same in battles. And maybe it even helps editing the units after the battle...

Sounds like a great idea. Maybe a core unit of veterans? These are the old grunts that have survived for so long. The other untis can have typical setting like Strachwitz sugested. It does add to the flavour of the campaign.

Perhaps 10-15k of core veterans and the rest is typical

Dutch's idea is getting a little sidetracked and not (in my opinion) in the spirit of what Odin was seeking to do with this campaign. Want to hear his ideas on this. @Odin

If I get a vote the more I think about it the 'Regular' starting point I raised above is easier to manage and would ensure an equal points footing for both sides. Mixing and matching between typical and other settings can get messy OOB wise. Multiple hundred point variances like Strachwitz raises can be equivalent of a company - battalion's worth of troops which may become crucial towards the end of the campaign.

FWIW, my view is to stick to "typical"; by definition, that gets you a mixture of quality / experience, etc, yes?

That does beg the question of whether BF/CM's view of "typical" is realistic for this period and location, but it does take the choice (and possible juggling of forces) out of our hands to a large extent: we play with what we get!

I'm not too enamoured of playing as the Soviets against a German force biased towards "crack" King Tiger units ...

That discussion brings me to another question related to all this. I read the rules 3 times but I am still no sure how infantry casualties are handled. Everything like Units below 50% are rendered combat ineffective until amalgate with another company and other stuff is clear. But I still don't know the way how the casualties are counted.
I assume after the battle is over in the review map someone has to click through every squad of a company and count the casualties (at least in RT you can see that at a glance). So you know the head count for a company at the beginning and at the end and therefore know the percentage the unit suffered casualties. Is this the way this will be handled?

If this is the case this brings me back to the Core Unit File. And I didn't mean it in the way Dutch did. What I mean is purchasing all units of a Army in the scenario editor and save it. That is the Core Unit File. When creating one of the occurring battles you simply load the core unit files of both armies and just delete all units not active in the fight. This applies to all battles fought in a turn. Load file, strip off the units not fighting and go. After the turn is complete all casualties off all fight can be edited to the core unit file. For example Company X/1st Batallion down to 70% and so on.
That way you have the best possible continuation of the forces involved. Stuff like names of Units (you just have to rename them at the beginning), names of soldiers and most off all experience, motivation etc. are carried over from turn to turn.

As for typical settings or regular setting I am fine with both with a slight favor to typical. Both ways have their advantages and disadvantages.
Regular for every unit is the most balanced as units have always the same price.
Typical setting feels more real and should boost immersion as adds depth to the operation. But maybe leads to some asymmetrical force sized although I believe that with 65000 points each this should be more ore less straightened out. But the danger is there. I for myself have no problem with that. For me it's not the competition that interests me most it is the experience of a rolling operation. Use what you have and make he best of it.
@PhilM : Typical setting are most influenced about the service branch of the unit. For example Waffen SS and Fallschirmjäger give you a mixture tending to the more skilled units with just some inexperienced ones. But in RT there is basically just normal Army and therefore the mix more to the average. BF got that quite good and I have lots of experience with Huge and up battles with typical settings. So there will be definitely not just crack King Tiger roaming around. A good mix with a slight tendency of better German units. But the Russians get more instead. Not always a bad choice.

Very long text short. It is Odins call

It's an option but still doesn't get around the fact that no matter what option we chose we have to re-enter the force selection into the Scenario Editor and hope for the best that the second result is close to the selection the quick battle editor gave you.

Given the amount of units both sides are fielding the variance in points could be up to around 5000 pts or slightly more by my estimate. That's essentially the equivalent of company of armour or two.

As for casualties I'll be going to nearest 10% headcount at the company level similar to what is possible in the editor. Not going down to squads etc as I want to keep my sanity. Don't expect a 1 for 1 casualty record. It is assumed between engagements that at the Company level that a few soldiers would be moved around. The below 50% rule is due to limitations in the editor itself and also to avoid units taking part in battles that are no more than 'speed bumps.'

Sorry for my slow reply, I'm on holiday until Thursday and I only have intermittent access to the Internet. The typical setting has also posed a few questions for myself. The main one being that as it is randomised, does this mean that in theory a side could keep on purchasing and deleting a formation from the quick battle selection screen until they get a 'typical ' purchase point they are happy with? I guess this isn't a deal breaker and I'm sure everyone is trust worthy enough not to do this but is there a way to ensure it can't happen? I did have a second issue about the painstaking nature of entering every squad's settings in the scenario editor before a battle if they each one possessed different values, but from what Strachwitz says about using a core file to record all units it sounds like this wouldn't be an issue.

I know I've posed another question rather than give answers about the purchase of units but I just want to get some feedback first and make sure we are as satisfied with the rules as we can be before we begin the campaign. Although I think it would be good to have variation in troop quality (however that be worked in to the campaign), ultimately I want to go with whatever works best for Ithikial so I'm happy to go with his call.

Re the casualty recording and amalgamations, personally I think if a company drops below 50% it should amalgamate with another from the same battalion if only for practical reasons to make running the campaign easier. If this is not possible though (eg only one company suffers heavy casualties while the others in its battalion are at full strength) then I think platoons within that casualty hit company should amalgamate and be allowed to continue to fight. Being away, unfortunately I don't have access to the rules right this minute so if I've contradicted something please correct me.

BTW welcome aboard @nathangun I've heard you've joined the Reds. Who is in command of you guys now?

OOB is in the process. But please be patient. A project like this takes some time to get it rolling (at least in my experience with monster QBs). We will be playing this one a long long time and some days more or less won`t hurt but will minimize errors and wrong decisions right before the game has even started.

Ah, another question. What about Rarity? I can`t find information on this in the rules....
As Dutch Grenadier is making the Axis OOB I don`t have any fears and this will be a quite realistic OOB but do we have any limitations on rarity?
