Stumbled onto an episode from the armchair historian on youtube where he talks about the Iran Iraq War. Is it just me or could this be an interesting module for CMSF2?

Also I may have fallen into the rabbit hole a bit...

WARNING! Viewer discretion adviced! This can get really graphic.

Nice summary video of a sad and wasteful military stalemate. I've heard the Iran/Iraq War described as a 20th Century conflict fought with 19th Century tactics; a WW1 redux using WW3 equipment. I doubt a BFC commercial module would be profitable. CMSF2 covers a later timeframe than the 1980's. The end of life game "Combat Mission Afghanistan" might be a better game for Iran/Iraq War community developed mods and scenario's. That's still too niche an area of interest for most people though.

The Combat Mission series are allready a very specific and narrow niche of games. What interested me in those videos where the vehicles and weapons used. Granted, I have not immersed myself into the specific battles in that war so I know little if any of them had any Combat Mission material. But post WWII CM is a bit lacking in redfor and the powebalance in both SF2 and BS is very west is best. Iran/Iraq War has the potential to pit equally second hand or home made armies with artillery and air support against each other where probably the better Warchief would prevail.

Of course, I haven´t really looked at the modding community yet, are there modded factions around? During my limited looksee I think I´ve mostly seen reskin jobs.

You're correct to note that most CM "mods" are re-skins or audio enhancements. There are a few (too few unfortunately) "scenario design mods" created by players who develop scenario's with scenario specific re-skins to portray battlefields outside of the vanilla combat mission games. Call-sign "kohlenklau" comes to my mind. He "tweaked" CMFI to produce Operation Hercules: The Invasion of Malta and a North Africa Mini Mod. I don't know what other people might have done in the other CM games.

Well Graviteam has a game titled “Steel Armor” specifically covering the Iran Iraq war. It is a hybrid tank simulator but also can be played operationally or so I have read. I have only done the tank simulation part. I believe it also has campaigns in Angola and Afghanistan as well. 70’s and 80’s time frame.

I might put that thing on my wishlist and check it out if it goes on sale.

Link for the curious:

Be warned that Graviteam titles have quirky UI’s and have steep learning curves. But they are good at what they do.

I have less interest in the tactical aspects of this war, which lets be honest, was pretty much nonexistent. Ive played a TOAW battle of this which captures the gruesome slogging match which it became. This was WW1 in modern times.

Was it in this TOAW?

Well I would think small unit tactical might be more “exciting” than the operational level of TOAW. You command a tank platoon plus some attached forces, the area is limited and you have to fight a battle to win some locality.

Exactly! The toys of war are all there! From cool sixties tanks, awesome helicopters, even bolt action rifles from WWII, the trusty AK, pretty sure I saw a G3 or something like it in the videos. There where some interesting battles in that war, I read up on the siege of Khorramshahr. Russian t55 vs british chieftans. Even mother effing Katyushas!

Yeah, pretty sucky and brutal war, but could be module goldmine gamewise.

Stumbled on to this on the youtube machine.

Might be an interesting hook or a spinoff of the idea of Iran/Iraq war module.
