Budapest Offensive 1944, RECCE Action DAR

My set-up and NVIDIA settings-

Processor: Intel i7-8700 3.70GHz
RAM: 32 GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080Ti
Screen Resolution: 3840 X 2160

Just tweaked a few NVIDA settings this morning. This shot is from CMRT, but I just use the same settings for all my CM games

You might be able to save a lot of power by setting it to "Optimal Power". Even if you don't pay a lot of money for electricity, you still have a cooler running and quieter system. And CM can't use more than a fraction of your graphics card's performance anyway.

Speaking of mortars. I packed up these two teams, after their wasteful and ineffective expenditure of ammunition, and I'm sending them forward to fight as infantry. Maybe, if I'm lucky, they will hit something then!

Conscripted into fodder duty, that will teach the survivors to aim better next time! You've made the Kommissar proud :LOL:
 
1. If you guys want to play an opponent who can constantly complete several turns a day (we're on 6 ea so far today!), contact Kraut.
2. Kraut is his screen name and he's from Germany (and he likes to play as the Germans), so if I say Kraut's a tough opponent so far this battle

Sounds like I found my next opponent...
 
Battle update, 24 minutes into the battle. My Soviet advance is all but stopped and causalities continue to mount. Krauts' Pixeltruppen are still supplied with ammunition and are still blasting away. Two separate German counter-attacks are underway, exploiting my left and right flanks. I'm picking off one or two enemy troops, but it is not slowing their advance or rate of fire.

The two trucks with the mortar teams didn't quite make it to the treeline as planned. One truck was knocked out by MG fire and causalities were incurred.

Comrades, the Fascist has the better of us this battle, but the war is not lost! After a tough infantry battle, @Kraut has successfully repulsed a large Soviet force. Although this was a meeting engagement, it quickly turned into a Soviet probe on German strong points! The result was the combat annihilation of a Soviet infantry battalion (-).
I think my prediction of the plan Kraut would take was quite accurate, however, I didn't anticipate the serious firepower advantage he would have. That and my aggressive maneuvers that put my troops squarely in the fields of fire of several MG-34's and mortars!
Fun match and quite different from a combined arms engagement.

I have surrendered to my opponent. Good fight and a great member to play against! Super quick turns and this whole battle only took 4-5 days.

The Butchers Bill! You can see the relative full formations Kraut still had and the vastly superior numbers still able to fight!

Thank you @Paleolithic Monk for this fantastic match, high turn ratio and also for writing this DAR. Playing against you always makes a lot of fun.
Your DAR is interesting to read and the screenshots are wonderful good-looking.

It is late in the night in Germany and therefore I will write about my tactic and thought regarding this battle tomorrow.
 
My strategy, tactic and thought about this battle:

This had been the 3rd match versus @Paleolithic Monk and I had lost the first and second one. Therefore and after seeing the map and the central and only victory location I decided to play for a draw.
Also that we agreed to play "infantry only" played a role for me to decide for this strategy. Without tank support it would be difficult to get total control of this big victory location (the village).
I like playing with @Paleolithic Monk very much and with him it is possible to finish a 45 minutes quick battle within a few days.

I decided to buy two infantry companies as they are provided. My only change had been that I added to each company a recon and a sniper team. I do like this "historic accurate" troop selection.
My initial plan had been like this:

One company on each side. Three mortar teams at the frontline and one mortar team (inside C2) for fire mission support behind the lines.

After I saw that the Soviets smoked the line of sight I saw the opportunity change the plan and occupy more buildings. I think in an infantry only battle buildings are way more important, because it is more difficult to expel troops from buildings without the firepower of tanks or vehicles. The new updated plan looked like this: (in light blue color the adjusted movement after I saw the smokescreen, in yellow color my counterattack in the last turns.)

My tactic has been to look for the best fighting distance against the expected Soviet SMG squads. That means I tried to avoid if possible to get closer than 100m. At medium distance my two LMG per squad had been superior against the Soviet squads. At closer distance the Soviets are superior.
Also I had for each company one reserve platoon. I assumed that the Soviets will attack through the woods on my left flank and therefore I had one platoon inside the woods and one platoon as reserve. At the end of the match I had two platoons inside the small wood area on my left.

Also three mortars had been deployed at the frontline for direct fire. I targeted with them with priority enemy MG teams and areas with high troop density.
I think this tactic is a bit unfair and I am thinking about to discuss for my next matches this prior the match to find a consensus if this is allowed (houserule).
 
On the one hand this is a brilliant DAR, very nice work. On the other hand this is everything I hate about playing meeting engagements. Too often it's just bum rush the objectives and then defend.
 
Thanks for the positive review! I do agree, mostly, on your assessment that most QB meeting engagements do result in a mad rush to contact and then a battle of attrition. Knowing this then, I try to experiment with different tactics to keep this type of battle fresh. This one , however really did develop into me and Kraut just bumping heads and his superior firepower eventually defeating me. I like QB probing battles or a good/ well designed scenario.
 
Thanks for the AAR - and well done both of you. I liked to read your tactical considerations.

I would say though, that this map seems too small for the amount of forces. That also means area effect weapons like mortars dominate such games. I personally like to play "Tiny" or "Small" size battles on "Medium" sized maps. More room to maneuver and to bring different combat ranges into play, without feeling too cramped.

I much prefer an attacker-defender quick battle or a good scenario. I've played some well-designed meeting engagement scenarios but even then it's not very interesting.
