Lyrics
(Stan Jones)

I left my love, my love I left her sleepin' in her bed.
I turned my back on my true love Went fightin' Johnny Reb.
I left my love a letter in the holler of a tree.
I told her she would find me in the U.S. Calvary.

Refrain: |: Heigh-O, down they go there's no such word as can't
We'll ride clean down to Hell! And! Back!
For Ulysses Simpson Grant :|

Last Refrain: Heigh-O, down they go there's no such word as can't
We'll ride clean down to New Orleans!
For Ulysses Simpson Grant

Info

The entire stanzas will repeated three times. But the Refrain changes a bit for the last time from "...to Hell! And! Back!" to "...to New! OR-! -leans!". And for the third repeat of the first stanza the part "...in the U.S.-Cavalry" is repeated one time.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Awesome song, remember it from the Ford/John Wayne western movies....
Thanks Sempai
:")
Lighthorse:peach:

As a kid, this was one of my favorite songs from a favorite movie, "The Horse
Soldiers".
It is a rousing march that I would sing or hum when doing a physical task,
running in sports,
or marching cadence in the military. It and 'She Wore a Yellow Ribbon'
"inspired" me to make it
through boot camp physical chores.

George M. Cohan

1.) Johnny, get your gun, get your gun, get your gun.
Take it on the run, on the run, on the run.
Hear them calling you and me,
Every Son of Liberty.
Hurry right away, no delay, go today.
Make your Daddy glad to have had such a lad.
Tell your sweetheart not to pine,
To be proud her boy's in line.

2.) Johnny, get your gun, get your gun, get your gun,
Johnny, show the "Hun" you're a son-of-a-gun.
Hoist the flag and let her fly.
Yankee Doodle do or die.
Pack your little kit, show your grit, do your bit.
Yankee to the ranks from the towns and the tanks.
Make your Mother proud of you
And the old red-white-and-blue

Refrain: |: Over there, over there,
Send the word, send the word over there
That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming
The drums rum-tumming everywhere.
So prepare, say a prayer,
Send the word, send the word to beware -
We'll be over, we're coming over,
And we won't come back till it's over, over there. :|

1.) He was just a cherry trooper and he surely shook with fright
as he checked all his equipment and made sure his pack was tight
He had to sit and listen to the awful engines roar,
And he ain't gonna jump no more.

2.) “Is everybody happy?” cried the Sergeant, looking up.
Our hero feebly answered “yes,” and then they stood him up.
He leaped right out into the blast, his static line unhooked.
He ain’t gonna jump no more.

3.) He counted long, he counted loud, he waited for the shock;
He felt the wind, he felt the clouds, he felt the awful drop;
He jerked his cord, the silk spilled out and wrapped around his legs.
He ain’t gonna jump no more.

4.) The risers wrapped around his neck, connectors cracked his dome;
The lines were snarled and tied in knots, around his skinny bones;
The canopy became his shroud, he hurtled to the ground.
He ain’t gonna jump no more.

5.) The days he’d lived and loved and laughed kept running through his mind;
He thought about the girl back home, the one he’d left behind;
He thought about the medics and wondered what they’ed find.
He ain’t gonna jump no more.

6.) The ambulance was on the spot, the jeeps were running wild;
The medics jumped and screamed with glee, they rolled their sleeves and smiled;
For it had been a week or more since last a chute had failed.
He ain’t gonna jump no more.

7.) He hit the ground, the sound was splat, his blood went spurting high;
His comrades were then heard to say, “A heck of way to die”;
He lay there rolling ‘round in the welter of his gore.
And he ain’t gonna jump no more.

8.) There was blood upon the risers, there were brains upon the 'chute.
Intestines were a-dangling from his paratrooper suit.
He was a mess, they picked him up and poured him from his boots.
And he ain't gonna jump no more

Refrain: Gory, Gory, What a hell of way to die
Gory, Gory, What a hell of way to die
Gory, Gory, What a hell of way to die
He ain’t gonna jump no more.

Lyrics
Julia Ward Howe

1.) Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword.
His truth is marching on.

2.) I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps.
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps.
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps.
His day is marching on.

3.) I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
“As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal.
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on.”

4.) He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat.
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat.
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

5.) In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me.
As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

6.) He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave.
He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of wrong His slave.
Our God is marching on.

Refrain: Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, (glory) hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

Text: Julia Ward Howe wrote the text of that march during the american civil war.
Music: The actual march - the theme - was from the former popular march "John Brown´s Body".

Denn Gott schreitet voran.

4.) Er hat in die Trompete gestoßen, die nie zum Rückzug rufen wird,
Er siebt auf seinem Richterstuhl die Herzen der Menschen aus:
Antworte ihm eifrig, meine Seele! Jubiliert, meine Füße!
Unser Gott schreitet voran.

Er ist Weisheit den Mächtigen und Ehre den Tapferen;
So wird die Erde sein Schemel sein und die Seelen der Ungerechten seine Diener
Unser Gott marschiert voran.

Refrain: Rühmt ihn, rühmt ihn, Halleluja!
Rühmt ihn, rühmt ihn, Halleluja!
Rühmt ihn, rühmt ihn, Halleluja!
Seine Wahrheit schreitet voran.

I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before
I wanna good mount when the bugle sounds and I hear the cannons' roar
I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war

well,I wanna horse in the volunteer force that's riding forth at dawn
Please save for me some gallantry that will echo when I'm gone
I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn
Lemme at least leave a good hoof beat they'll remember loud and long

I'd not a good foot soldier make, I'd be sour and slow at march
And I'd be sick on a navy ship, and the sea would leave me parched
But I'll be first in line if they'll let me ride, by god, you'll see my starch
Lope back o'er the heath with the laurel wreath underneath that vict’ry arch

I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before
I wanna good mount when the bugle sounds and I hear the cannons' roar
I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war

Let me earn my spurs in the battle's blur where the day is lost or won
I'll wield my lance as the ponies dance and the blackguards fire their guns
A sabre keen, and a saddle carbine and an army Remington
Where the hot lead screams with the cold, cold steel let me be a cav’lryman

I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before
I wanna good mount when the bugle sounds and I hear the cannons' roar
I wanna be in the cavalry if i must go of to war

Let 'em play their flutes and stirrup my boots and place them back to front
Cause I won’t be back on the rider-less black and I'm finished in my hunt
I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
I wanna be in the cavalry, but I won't ride home no more

I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before
Courageous at first we took their worst, our positions we held stout We clung to belief and we hung on the speech from our trusted leaders’ mouths Overwhelming odds and a hopeless cause and our cities overrun There were them that said we was badly led and God were we outgunned
I lost count of the worthy mounts that from under me were cut My favourite mare with her head in the air took the cannons in her gut In the first two weeks on that bloody creek my brother lost his arm Was only sixty days till all we prayed was get us home unharmed
O for the day that we signed our names and the well that we were wished
The men’s congrats and the pats on the backs and the ladies that we kissed The band that played and the grande parade and the patriotic shouts All faded fast, didn't even last till the uniforms wore out
And there were none to replace nor to help us face the winters cold and bleak That chilled to the bone the pneumonia prone and froze our bootless feet Then the typhoid hit with its fevered fits, TB and dysentery That proved in the end to have killed more men than the vilest enemy
We were finally forced to feed on horse and carcass we could scrounge When the wagons stopped and we’d burnt their crops to charred and barren ground With morale in doubt and our pride run out no honour did I see All I seen were a thousand dreams piled dead in front of me
I wanna be in the cavalry if the send me off to war I wanna be in the cavalry but I won’t ride home no more

1.) Fighting soldiers from the sky
Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say
The brave men of the Green Beret

2.) Trained to live, off nature's land
Trained in combat, hand to hand
Men who fight by night and day
Courage deep, from the Green Beret

3.) Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her this last request

4.) Put silver wings on my son's chest
Make him one of America's best
He'll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret

Refrain: Silver wings upon their chest
These are men, America's best
One hundred men we'll test today
But only three win the Green Beret

We'll give him a hearty welcome then, Hurrah! Hurrah!
Oh, the men will cheer the boys will shout, The ladies they will all turn out,
|: And we'll all feel gay When Johnny comes marching home. :|

2.) Get ready for the Jubilee, Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give the hero three times three, Hurrah! Hurrah!
Well, the laurel wreath is ready now To place upon his loyal brow,
|: And we'll all feel gay When Johnny comes marching home. :|

3.) In eighteen hundred and sixty-one, Hurrah! Hurrah!
That was when the war begun, Hurrah! Hurrah!
In eighteen hundred and sixty-two, Both sides were falling to,
|: And we'll all drink stone wine, When Johnny comes marching home. :|

4.) In eighteen hundred and sixty-three, Hurrah! Hurrah!
Old Abe, he ended slavery, Hurrah! Hurrah!
In eighteen hundred and sixty-three, Old Abe, he ended slavery
|: And we'll all drink stone wine, When Johnny comes marching home. :|

5.) In eighteen hundred and sixty-four, Hurrah! Hurrah!
Abe called for five hundred thousand more, Hurrah! Hurrah!
In eighteen hundred and sixty-five, They talked rebellion--strife;
|: And we'll all drink stone wine, When Johnny comes marching home. :|

Other version

We'll give him a hearty welcome then, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The men will cheer and the boys will shout The ladies they will all turn out
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.

2.) The old church bell will peal with joy, Hurrah! Hurrah!
To welcome home our darling boy, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The village lads and lassies say With roses they will strew the way,
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.

3.) Get ready for the Jubilee, Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll give the hero three times three, Hurrah! Hurrah!
The laurel wreath is ready now To place upon his loyal brow
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home.

4.) Let love and friendship on that day, Hurrah, hurrah!
Their choicest pleasures then display, Hurrah, hurrah!
And let each one perform some part, To fill with joy the warrior's heart,
And we'll all feel gay when Johnny comes marching home

1.) Bring the good ol' Bugle boys! We'll sing another song,
Sing it with a spirit that will start the world along,
Sing it like we used to sing it fifty thousand strong,
While we were marching through Georgia

2.) How the darkeys shouted when they heard the joyful sound,
How the turkeys gobbled which our commissary found,
How the sweet potatoes even started from the ground,
While we were marching through Georgia.

3.) Yes and there were Union men who wept with joyful tears,
When they saw the honored flag they had not seen for years;
Hardly could they be restrained from breaking forth in cheers,
While we were marching through Georgia.

4.) "Sherman's dashing Yankee boys will never make the coast!"
So the saucy rebels said and 'twas a handsome boast
Had they not forgot, alas! to reckon with the Host
While we were marching through Georgia.

5.) So we made a thoroughfare for freedom and her train,
Sixty miles of latitude, three hundred to the main;
Treason fled before us, for resistance was in vain
While we were marching through Georgia.

Refrain: Hurrah! Hurrah! We bring the Jubilee.
Hurrah! Hurrah! The flag that makes you free,
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea,
While we were marching through Georgia.

1.) Hurrah for the choice of the nation,
Our chieftain so brave and so true,
We'll go for the great reformation,
For Lincoln and Liberty, too!

2.) Our David's good sling is unerring,
The Slavocrat's giant he slew,
Then shout for the freedom preferring,
For Lincoln and Liberty, too.

3.) They'll find what by felling and mauling,
Our railmaker statesman can do;
For the people are everywhere calling
For Lincoln and Liberty too.

4.) Then up with the banner so glorious,
The star-spangled red, white, and blue,
We'll fight till our banner's victorious,
For Lincoln and Liberty, too.

Refrain: We'll go for the son of Kentucky,
The hero of Hoosierdom through,
The pride of the "Suckers" so lucky,
For Lincoln and Liberty, too.

1.) Southern men the thunders mutter!
Northern flags in South winds flutter!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Send them back your fierce defiance!
Stamp upon the cursed alliance!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie

2.) Fear no danger! Shun no labor!
Lift up rifle, pike, and sabre!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Shoulder pressing close to shoulder,
Let the odds make each heart bolder!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

3.) Swear upon your country's altar
Never to submit or falter
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Till the spoilers are defeated,
Till the Lord's work is completed!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Refrain: Advance the flag of Dixie!
Hurrah! Hurrah!
For Dixie's land we take our stand,
And live or die for Dixie!
To arms! To arms!
And conquer peace for Dixie!
To arms! To arms!
And conquer peace for Dixie!

Russ Morgan/The Andrews Sisters

1.) Round her neck she wore a yellow ribbon
She wore it in the winter
And the merry month of May
When I asked her, Why the yellow ribbon?
She said, It’s for my lover who is far far away
Far away, far away,
She said, It’s for my lover who is far far away
Far away, far away,
She said, It’s for my lover who is far far away

2.) When, at first, she met a winsome Johnny
He wasn’t sure her heart was pure
Her eyes were far too bold
So, round her neck
He tied a yellow ribbon
He tied a yellow ribbon
‘Cause it matched her hair of gold
Hair of gold, hair of gold He tied a yellow ribbon
‘Cause it matched her hair of gold
Hair of gold, hair of gold
He tied a yellow ribbon
For her eyes were far too bold

3.) If, perchance, you spy a lovely maiden
And by her side, there walks with pride
A Johnny strong and gay
And round her neck there is a yellow ribbon
No matter how you love her
Please stay far far away
Far away, far away,
No matter how you love her
Please stay far far away
Far away, far away,
Her love is for another
So stay far far away
Far far away

Intro: March along, sing our song, with the Army of the free
Count the brave, count the true, who have fought to victory
We're the Army and proud of our name
We're the Army and proudly proclaim

1.) First to fight for the right,
And to build the Nation’s might,
And The Army Goes Rolling Along
Proud of all we have done,
Fighting till the battle’s won,
And the Army Goes Rolling Along.

2.) Valley Forge, Custer's ranks,
San Juan Hill and Patton's tanks,
And the Army went rolling along
Minute men, from the start,
Always fighting from the heart,
And the Army keeps rolling along.

3.) Men in rags, men who froze,
Still that Army met its foes,
And the Army went rolling along.
Faith in God, then we're right,
And we'll fight with all our might,
As the Army keeps rolling along.

Refrain: Then it's Hi! Hi! Hey!
The Army's on its way.
Count off the cadence loud and strong
For where e’er we go,
You will always know
That The Army Goes Rolling Along.

1.) In the army of the Union,
we are marching in the van,
And will do the work before us,
if the bravest soldiers can;
We will drive the Rebel forces
from their strongholds to the sea,
And will live and die together
in the Army of the Free.

Army of the Free,
The Army of the Free,
We will live and die together
in the Army of the Free.

2.) We may rust beneath inaction,
we may sink beneath disease
The summer sun may scorch us
or the winter's blast may freeze,
But whatever may befall us,
we will let the Rebels see,
The unconquered we shall remain
the Army of the Free,

The Army of the Free,
The Army of the Free,
Unconquered we shall remain
The Army of the Free.

3.) We are the best division of
a half a million souls,
And only resting on our arms
till the war cry onward rolls;
When our gallant General Porter calls,
why ready we shall be,
To follow him forever
with the Army of the Free,

The Army of the Free,
The Army of the Free,
We will follow him forever
With the Army of the Free.

4.) We have Butterfield the daring
and we've Martindale the cool,
Where could we learn the art of war
within a better school,
Add Morel to the list of names,
and we must all agree,
We have the finest Generals
in the Army of the Free,

The Army of the Free,
The Army of the Free,
We have the finest Generals
In the Army of the Free.

5.) Though we live in winter quarters now,
we're waiting but the hour,
When Porter's brave division
shall go forth in all its power,
And when on the field of battle,
fighting we shall be,
We'll show that we cannot disgrace
the Army of the Free,

The Army of the Free,
The Army of the Free,
We'll show that we cannot disgrace
The Army of the Free,

6.) Then hurrah for our division,
may it soon be called to go,
To add its strength to those who have
advanced to meet the foe;
God bless it, for we know right well,
wherever it may be,
'Twill never fail to honor our great
Army of the Free,

The Army of the Free,
The Army of the Free,
'Twill never fail to honor our great
Army of the Free.
