Audie Murphy's Medal of Honor

Good questions...

Im not sure he actually reloaded the .50 cal.

The M10 he was on was knocked out early in the battle so probably had a full rack of ammo. He initially called in artillery then used his M1 Carbine... then grabbed the .50 cal. Some men must have been in the vicinity because there were eyewitness accounts of what he was doing but I suspect the reason for his longevity was the fact that the Germans were finding it hard to get an eye on him due to the smoke and flames and the incoming artillery fire making them keep their heads down.

Personally I think there must be some embellishment to the story... an hour is an awful long time to pin an enemy unit down and much like the Lanzerath Ridge battle in '44 I think the Germans expected the tree line to be home to a much larger American force.
