A film I've always enjoyed and till recently I thought Ron Goodwin (also did the great soundtrack for Where Eagles Dare) was the sole contributor to the score. Not so it seems.
One of the great moments in the film is the extended battle montage near the end where we see the RAF battle it out with the Luftwaffe to what I thought was a piece of music by Goodwin. But, Battle in the Air was composed by William Walton. There was in fact two soundtracks for the film. I think Walton's was the first but the producers weren't keen on it. It was only after Laurence Olivier threatened to leave the production that some of the original soundtrack was included. After this threat Walton's Battle in the Air was added. Here's the piece performed at the PROMs. It starts around 1:14.
