What makes someone a good president anyway? The luck to pick the right people as your aides and secretary's? And to be presient in a good era?

There may be some of that. However, Lincoln was president during the USA's undisputably worst (most difficult) era, and he has arguably proved to be one of the best Presidents. So, performance is still a hugh part of whether a President is ultimately deemed "good" or "bad."

The question should be What makes a good president?

Bill Clinton was a good President, but not one of the great ones. Very few presidents can be labeled great, 3 or 4 of them.
The one thing Bill was very good at was the art of BS-ing his way out of a tight corner, in a conservation.
