Trevor Royle demonstrates how the Crimean War was a watershed in world history: coming between the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 and the opening shots of the First World War in 1914 it pointed the way to what mass warfare would be like for soldiers in the twentieth century.
An excellent book, brings home the folly of war. One sentence in particular which I'll never forget "In time honoured fashion the Union flag was lowered, reveille was sounded and, not for the last time in the country's history, British troops were leaving a foreign shore, uncertain whether all their courage and sacrifices had been worth the effort."
Your time won't be misspent reading this book 9/10.
