China has started building its own aircraft carrier: official

I guess this was only a matter of time?

Are we facing a "Carrier Naval Race" like the "Battleship Race" between Britain and Germany preceeding World War 1?

China now has one aircraft carrier, the Soviet-built Liaoning, which was refurbished in Dalian after it was acquired from Ukraine.

HONG KONG (Kyodo) -- China has started to build its first domestically produced aircraft carrier in the port city of Dalian in the northeastern province of Liaoning, the Liaoning party chief said Saturday.

The online edition of the Hong Kong daily Ta Kung Pao said Liaoning communist party secretary Wang Min disclosed the project at a meeting of the provincial people's congress.

This appears to be the first time that a Chinese official has confirmed the existence of a Chinese domestic aircraft carrier building program.
The Chinese media reported last month that China will start building an aircraft carrier in Dalian this year and another in Shanghai. But government authorities have never confirmed plans to build one in Shanghai.

Wang told the provincial people's congress that it would take six years to finish building the aircraft carrier and the Chinese military plans to have four aircraft carriers in the future.

China currently has one aircraft carrier, the Soviet-built Liaoning, which was refurbished in Dalian after it was acquired from Ukraine.
China says the Liaoning, which was put into service in 2012, will be used for training and research as part of its plans to develop a domestic aircraft carrier building program.
next year.

Why not they have a right to their own protection of their country and islands that they own. They are keeping their people working and that means less of them coming over here.

I agree ... but will the USA see it's naval dominance of the Pacific threatened?

The parallels to pre WW1 are notable ... the established maritime empire (Britain) and the dynamic new land-based economic powerful upstart (Germany) -- and both were as economically bound as China & USA is now.

The USA sees itself as the thing in the world fighting for truth, justice and the American way. ;) Yes they will feel threatened ...they would feel threatened if some one built a canoe without their permission.
Parallels to WW1? No all of our economies are tied to close together, Walmart would never allow a war with China. LOL

What is forgotten that at turn of century many economists and business people also thought war was impossible as the economies were tied too close together as well ... little did they no.

It's not up to our politicians to make war, it is the corporations and military industrial complex that run things in our western countries. If it serves the corporate interest then we will.

They have quite some catching up to do.

As soon as the global economy and currency snowball system crashes (and it has to, at least partially) there has to be war. As soon there is not enough economic growth war servers in too ways for corporations. Spending tax money on war material (best as long as possible) and then the reconstruction of destroyed countries, It`s somekind of a "reset" for economies. Happened before (in small and large scales) and will happen again...

Japan is already building aircraft carriers in the sense that their largest "destroyers" can (and will) carry a sizable number of helicopters...helicopters you say? Just remember that Japan is buying the VTOL/STOL Version of the F-35...

The USN has almost 100 years of naval aviation experience. I suspect if it comes to a shooting war the USN will give better than it gets, by a sizable margin.

We are here talking about a process that might take a decade or two?
