Escape the Falaise Pocket!

I just finished my 1km/1km map today and have begun the ardous task of creating units, AI plans, and briefings. This will be a huge scenario and will be my first ever attempt at creating a scenario.

In this semi-historical scenario, you will be commanding the 2 PzGren. Battalion, 116 Panzer Division and will be tasked with capturing a town crucial to escaping from the encirclement of British and Polish units. This will not be an easy scenario and will probably take a whopping 2 hours if I get the AI plans done right. I attempt to use triggers with this scenario. And there is where you guys come in.

Once I feel that this scenario has matured enough with my tinkering, I will need a few play testers. Now, since this will be a huge scenario, it might take you guys a bit to complete it. So keep that in mind. I plan on having the Unit placement and plans done early this morning, then I will need to fill in the briefing. So tonight, or sometime this weekend the scenario will be completish.

Any help is appreciated guys and I hope you enjoy it!

If you're still planning and working on it then this should be in the Design Section rather than scenario testing. Also to attract interest in getting guinea pigs... er I mean testers, always good to include some pics. :)

Can I please get this thread moved to the Design Section? I will be updating the thread in just a bit with some pictures.

Here we go folks!

A completed map with AI plans for both sides. Just got to finish the briefing and we will be all set for testing!

You will be commanding a veteran Panzergrenadier battalion from the 116th Panzer "Windhund" Division on August 20th, 1944. You will be receiving Heavy Panzer reinforcements over the course of the next 30 minutes. Use these Panzers to counter any Polish Armor and assist the Grenadiers in taking the objectives.

The hour is dire and the Falaise Pocket is closing around us. Your mission is to secure an escape route toward the Diver Diver (off map). You must advance cautiously against the enemy whom scouts report is a Polish Battalion from the 1st Polish Armoured Divison. Do not take them for granted. Once contact is made, they will most assuredly radio for reinforcements. Expect a large contingent of anti-armor assets.

Scouts report a roadblock ahead. According to their reports, the road is barred with tank traps, and the wrecks of unknown friendly units. The likelihood of a mined highway is high. The stakes are too high, so command has delegated an engineer company to assist you.

It may be best to advance by the flanks and envelop your enemy. You might consider advancing on both flanks in unison or advancing on one. Taking the Farm to secure a flank is a crucial task, but be wary of the bridge. You have adequate artillery and mortars to conceal your movements with smoke, and suppress your enemy when the time comes to attack.

Got Mitt Uns!

Good evening. Today I completely reworked the map because I didn't like how plain and boring it looked. The new map has far more interesting features that will change the dynamics of the battle. Now, I have read JonS's scenario design thread over at the BF forums. It was very insightful. However, I am having some major problems programming the AI's.

First, what type of order should I be using if I want the Allied AI to retreat to a new defensive position and face the way they came from without staying on the enemy side of the bocage?

Second, should the AI be grouped at the battalion, company, or platoon level for the best challenge when facing the AI?

Third, should I use timers or triggers for the AI's?

Any help is appreciated.

Other than that, I have begun more in depth research on the TOE/OOB of the units involved on the 20th of August in the Falaise Gap. This scenario should fit the narrative already established by excellent scenarios such as "The Mace".

Also, I want to thank Christopher Nelson for inspiration. His campaign, Kampfgruppe Engel, is influencing the challenges I am hopefully setting for this scenario. Achieving success as either side should be fun and challenging.

Something else I am working on. It's a master map of the Lambert Sur Dives-Moissy operational area. Thousands of German troops funneled across the Moissy Ford and Lambert bridge in a desperate effort to escape the closing Canadian-American Forces. I will be using this master map to create a couple of scenarios to depict the efforts of the Canadian Argyll and Sutherland Highlander Regiment and the German stragglers trying to escape. These scenarios will loosely follow the Flames of War Falaise Gap scenarios.

The other scenario is on hold because the map does not reflect any operation that I can fin that the 116th division partook in, especially against the Polish 1st Polish Armoured Division. When I do, I will release it as a completely new scenario.

I just realized what a waste of time that was...

I extracted the KG Engel campaign and there is far more detailed map of Saint Lambert in there. Doh! I also realized that I have no clue what I am doing in the scenario editor except wasting a LOT of time.

Its okay I suppose. It lacks a lot the details that were present in the campaign. I simply am unable to find maps of the Saint Lambert-Chambois area around this time frame. By the way, I just completed a medium sized Axis scenario and need some testers. Would you be interested in checking it out?

Hahaha, same here. I just want to keep practicing on this map and scenario stuff. Lots of fun stuff here. I need to find a series of battles that haven't been covered by others already, gotta stay original ;)
