Came across this game the other day, like all G.G.'s game it has very detail of the war covered and built into the mechanics.
Here's two videos of two players playing their first turns of a P.B.E.M. The American player seems to have a better understanding of the game, while in later videos the Japanese player seems to be getting a better grip on how things work.

Just bought WitPAE, myself. It's pricey ($80 for a game that is ten years old?), but the code might just be worth it. I modded it up to make it look pretty and am current getting my butt kicked in the Coral Sea mini scenario.

If u start playing this once - your personal life will only suffer. It is a time vampire of a game.Possibly the only game where u have to take notes and make calculations on a notebook before u send that taskforce to its randesvous with fate when playing pbem with your opponent. At least an hour for a turn and maybe more in the busy "days" and it is simply addictive beyond anything. Micromaging the ships ( PT boat to Yamato size ) on a 1 by 1 basis .... u were warned.

GG games are insane but very rewarding. I havent got or played WitP but I have WitE and WitW. Might be signing up for a WitE team game shortly.

On the one hand it's an amazing and incredibly detailed wargame - on the other hand it invites/requires a level of micromanagement that is beyond the means of most humans. Basically you have to do the job of a whole staff of officers. One hour per turn is the minimum, so each full game can take years to complete.

I played the pre-AE version in ~2008, the Guadalcanal campaign. That was still manageable. Then I and my opponent started the main campaign. He decided to quit after 2 months because I couldn't send more than one turn per day.

@idilix did you say you completed the full campaign 4 times? How did it go? And how did the wars end?

Yeah, even in my best grognard days, this would have been waay outside my doable gaming level.
I believe, my friend and I hope that I don't misquote you, that you once said Gary Grigsby games are more a lifestyle than a game...

So I got a 25% off coupon from Matrix games and immediately put it towards WITP:AE today. I've played a lot of WWII pacific games, but not on this scale.

Hope you weren’t planning on doing anything else the next 3-4 years . Actually a very thourough treatment of the Pacific War. As with most Grigsby Games very wide and very deep. Enjoy!

GG games in general are in a class of their own. When the original War in the Pacific came out in the 90's I would wake up in the morning and play till the early morning hours. My arms and shoulders would ache. After playing the campaign game a few times and beating the computer and finishing off Japan I put it away and never played until the 2000s when a new version came out. I played the scenarios a few times h2h, then took up a full campaign game against a human opponent as the Allieds. I was new and didn't know the ins and outs of playing a real human. After a few turns he offered to restart after he wiped out my carriers. Once I knew what to expect we played till 1945. I was pumping out 2-3 turns per day on average and on the weekends 4-6 turns.

Soon after WiTP AE came out and we decided to start another campaign. Once again I was the allieds. I won't give it away, but any competent human opponent playing Japan knows what the drill is and as the Allieds you know what a competent player who is playing Japan will do and its cat and mouse for the first 6-12 months. After that it becomes a grind for the allieds. The end game is pretty grueling. To be honest by then it was more work than fun.

If you have the time, no commitments and willing to invest a good part of your life playing the full campaign against a human is something you should experience at least once in your lifetime.

Young man , dont do it... you will lose countless hours for countless days as u nano-manage your land, air and naval units. Imagine searching for a 6 gun CD gun battery in Australia that needs to be shipped to Soerabaja and u also have to sync the ships, the escort, the aircover and the transport cost in fuel , not to mention the supply for that battery. And, oh you may also need to change the commander of the unit to suit the mission.
