Gary Grigsby's War in the West - SALE on Steam

It's certanly a game of time, but ones you get its mechanics you can get entertanied for hours just changing squadrons and checking data all over the place.

I got War in the East but really haven't got deep into it. There is a new version soon to be released and I'll get it and try it out.

War in the West is enjoyable and the Torch expansion is fun. One thing I have found is once I take Sicily and invade the Italian mainland its easy to outflank the Axis by doing end arounds and being aggressive. You really can't expect the AI to be able to react or play as well as a good human opponent. I don't know what the future plans are for WitW, but I would like to see it expanded to 41 or even earlier and it all linked so you can play from 41-45 or 39-45.

One negative about the Torch expansion is a bug that prevents the allied fighters from attacking the German air transports. I don't think this has been fixed, but it makes it very hard to defeat the Axis in the scenario.

This is one I would be interested in try out h2h.

What had been the sale price? I unfortunately missed the sale and now I am waiting for WitE2, which will be released very soon.
If WitW will be on sale again for a heavy reduced price I will be tempted to buy, but not for the current price.

I don't know what the future plans are for WitW, but I would like to see it expanded to 41 or even earlier and it all linked so you can play from 41-45 or 39-45.
I hope they will produce something like War in Europe with the whole European map and North Africa and combine War in the East and West to one game. That would be great.

Matrix holds many holiday sales so you'll be able to get what you want at discount.

US 8thAF Bombing.png

Turn 1 air planning phase for 43-45 Campaign. Following the strategy outlined in the Strategic Bombing Campaign video, I'm targeting the truck production at Frankfurt. All B-17s and B-24s will take part. P-47s will fly escort part way as their range doesn't allow them to escort all the way to target.

RAF Night Bombing.png

The RAF will follow up the 8th AF bombing of truck facilities with night raids on cities that produce trucks.

Fighter Command.png

Fighter Command will fly air superiority missions centered around Dunkirk. Meanwhile Typhoon squadrons have been transferred to Africa and transferred to the Tactical Air Command to support the upcoming invasion of Sicily. 2 Typhoon squadrons has also been transferred to the Coastal AF in the Mediterranean to support naval interdiction missions. Fighter Command is screaming bloody murder and not happy about losing a good portion of its strength, but Eisenhower has insisted they will be of better use supporting the invasion of Sicily and has reminded everyone that the idea of invading the soft underbelly isn't popular in the US.

There is pressure to just invade Europe directly and get the war over by Christmas 44...

Bombing Mission-1.png

The Luftwaffe rises to the fight. The truck plant built by Henry Ford would be defended furiously.

Bombing Mission-3.png

Flak and constant harassment by Luftwaffe dogged the mission....

Summary-2.png
Overall summary of the weeks air action. Missions to bomb UBoat facilities aborted.

Summary-4.png
A weeks worth of bombing produced estimated 17% production damage to vehicle production-playing with fog of war so may be more, may be less damage. Losing over 100 B-17s and B-24s in a week from 3 raids over a weeks time period worth it?

Summary-5.png
RAF night bombing produced less damage, but suffered a far less loss rate.

so, I own WITP, WITE1 and WITW with the TORCH expansion pack. Bought them all a long time ago, played them a lot, but had not played them for years. Now that WITE2 is out and I am trying to decide if I want to pick it up, I dusted off WITE1 and WITW.

I had spent the least amount of time on WITW, but now that I have taken the time to really learn the game mechanics, it is really growing on me and seems by far, the most accessible of the bunch.

NAVAL: WITPAE has a very detailed model which tracks almost every ship that ever fought in the war. Fun in 41, but quickly becomes a management nightmare for the USA by 44. WITW has a totally abstract system where naval is represented by lift capacity for troops/supply and naval support is attached to amphibious HQs. It is very easy to manage and works well within the context on the game which is really about ground combat;

LOGISTICS: In WITE1, logistics quickly becomes a major issue as your troops go deep into Russia and outrun their supply conduit. In WITW, you never really have to worry about it. The system is more sophisticated than in WITE1, but the Allies have pretty much unlimited supplies/lift capacity and except until your forces are deep into France, your troops are always close to a port/depot;

AIR: The system is very sophisticated and detailed, but unlike NAVAL in WITPAE, you can let the AI handle as little or as much as you want and the AI does a decent job managing the Air War. so you can focus on the ground war. I usually let the AI generate missions based on my broad directives and then fine tune when required;

WORKLOAD: In WITP and WITE1, the sheer number of units to be moved each turn and having to focus on multiple sectors can quickly become overwhelming. In WITW, until D-Day, you rarely have to worry about more than 15-20 ground units at any time and usually only one theater is active at a time. Even when all your troops are in France, the number of units involved and the map area is only about 1/3 to 1/2 of those in WITE1.

PRICE: WITW has been out since 2014 so it regularly goes on sale on STEAM at 70% off.

so yes, WITW is probably the most accessible of the bunch and a good way to get into these games.
