so, I own WITP, WITE1 and WITW with the TORCH expansion pack. Bought them all a long time ago, played them a lot, but had not played them for years. Now that WITE2 is out and I am trying to decide if I want to pick it up, I dusted off WITE1 and WITW.
I had spent the least amount of time on WITW, but now that I have taken the time to really learn the game mechanics, it is really growing on me and seems by far, the most accessible of the bunch.
NAVAL: WITPAE has a very detailed model which tracks almost every ship that ever fought in the war. Fun in 41, but quickly becomes a management nightmare for the USA by 44. WITW has a totally abstract system where naval is represented by lift capacity for troops/supply and naval support is attached to amphibious HQs. It is very easy to manage and works well within the context on the game which is really about ground combat;
LOGISTICS: In WITE1, logistics quickly becomes a major issue as your troops go deep into Russia and outrun their supply conduit. In WITW, you never really have to worry about it. The system is more sophisticated than in WITE1, but the Allies have pretty much unlimited supplies/lift capacity and except until your forces are deep into France, your troops are always close to a port/depot;
AIR: The system is very sophisticated and detailed, but unlike NAVAL in WITPAE, you can let the AI handle as little or as much as you want and the AI does a decent job managing the Air War. so you can focus on the ground war. I usually let the AI generate missions based on my broad directives and then fine tune when required;
WORKLOAD: In WITP and WITE1, the sheer number of units to be moved each turn and having to focus on multiple sectors can quickly become overwhelming. In WITW, until D-Day, you rarely have to worry about more than 15-20 ground units at any time and usually only one theater is active at a time. Even when all your troops are in France, the number of units involved and the map area is only about 1/3 to 1/2 of those in WITE1.
PRICE: WITW has been out since 2014 so it regularly goes on sale on STEAM at 70% off.
so yes, WITW is probably the most accessible of the bunch and a good way to get into these games.
