Justified Self Defense: Mom Kills Armed Intruder with Shotgun; 9-1-1 Operator Gives H

Bert this article stood in our newspaper for the last two days :)

But what everybody has wrong is that the 911 operator did not give the "green" light of shooting the guy. All he said was: "do what you need to defend yourself"

To be honest .. love to have this law here in Aus ..

In Canada we can do what we need to with in reason to defend our selves or our properity. There are stages to the use of force with in the trasspass law, ask the person to leave , if the person refuses then you make escort then by the arm, if they resist further or become violent then you may use enough force to overcome their resistance etc etc. As for the protection of property I believe if a person entered my house with a knife and threatened my safty or my families' in some way I have the right to shot that person. If I am wrong then I will shot the person anyway and let the courts , and public opinion deside.

Same here,criminality in Greece has reached huge proportions,especially armed robbery against elderly people.
To be honest i d ve done the same thing without second thought.
It's easy to speak about human rights nad that nobody has right to shoot etc when u are living in a safe environment having ur family safe.
BUT what if are living in a place where robberies are common and ur family is in danger,well that change things a bit.

totally! though if my wife is alone with my children , mate... I would love for her to be able to use a weapon in defence of her family ...

@DG: missed the story.

I don't know how rare of a thing this is in the US (or anywhere else). I think most intruders are there for the money and try to stay unnoticed. But if there is an intruder with the intent to harm the people inside the house of course those people have every right to defend themselves. In my first post I was reacting to the way the article was written. Almost an encouragement to shoot and kill anybody who broke into a house.

I think the reaction should depend on what the intruder is doing. In this particular case the shooting seems totally justified (although I wonder what would have happened if she had warned the attacker verbally and perhaps with a warningshot before he broke into the room she was in). She was protecting her child and herself from bodily harm.

Although in the Netherlands self-defense is lawful it is quite hard (as I'm told) to get a fire arm. So another kind of defense would be necessary.
