This is a Dutch site (I posted an English link) about the Liberation Route in Holland. Along this route there are several historical places. Each of these spots have a listing spot. Take your time to listen to these stories.

I live in Cuijk that is near Boxmeer (119), Grave (123), Mook (4) and Overloon (117). I was born in Schijndel and that is near Sint Oedenrode (116), Uden (120) and Heeswijk Dinther (121). It is also about 25km from Eindhoven. So I know alot about the WWII history in Southern Holland.

Cuijk doesn't have a listing spot yet but I'm in the commite to get on. The story about Cuijk is that on the 17th of September 1944 2 US para's were supposed to land in Grave (7km to the west of Cuijk) but got scared. The plane turned around and they finnaly got to jump. They landed between Haps and Cuijk and were picked up by the Dutch resistance. The next day these 2 para's followed the Dutch resistance into Cuijk. There was a German heavy machinegun post that covered the Meuse river crossing. Together with the Dutch resistance the 2 para's captured this German post. These were the only Germans in Cuijk so from then on Cuijk was liberated. A few days later the British armor rolled into Cuijk and came under heavy mortar fire. These mortars were placed on the Mookerheide across the Meus river. Cuijk was under fire from September the 20th untill Januari 1945 when the mortars were finnaly sillenced.
