Robert Mason is the author of the classic biography 'Chickenhawk'-
And his website is here (including the first 4 chapters of the book)- http://www.robertcmason.com/
I just gave him an FGM link and asked him if he'd like to answer questions from FGM members about his time as a Huey pilot in Vietnam and he kindly emailed me back with-
-"Hi Mick. Sure, send me some questions.
Best,
Robert Mason"
So if anybody has questions for him, either post them in this thread or email/PM them to me and i'll copy them into a mail and forward them to him in due course.
There's no rush, which will give plenty of time for you to go buy, beg, borrow or steal the book if you haven't got it, and in the meantime just post any general Nam-related questions for him to be going on with.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'll start the ball rolling with:-
Hi Mr Mason,
In the book, you say you flew Huey 'slicks' (troop-carrying versions with 2 door gunners) throughout your time in Nam, and at one point resisted your commanders wish to switch you to gunships, making him goodnaturedly back down.
Given that you flew into many hot LZ's to drop troops and your slick was often hit by small-arms, didn't it ever cross your mind at any time to switch to gunships in order to give Charlie some serious payback for a change?
