The bottom German Military Airship M.I. looks like it's carrying a huge dart.

Weight balance for the rudder?
Damn, I have no idea.
Could it be the empennage?
And what is the empennage? I wondered. :rolleyes:I have looked at it up too, and it is a device that allows for stability and direction control during flight.

Just one man to fly the plane?
If I was the wireless operator I think I would take up flying lessons in my spare time.
Reminds me of back in 1974 I was visiting Australia. We were in Alice Springs and took a flight out to Ayres Rock. The plane held about 20 passengers and there was just one pilot and one stewardess. The pilot was a woman which was rare for commercial pilots back then but didn't bother me. On the way back to the Alice, the pilot let the stewardess fly the plane. I was surprised but then realized it was probably a very good idea. :)
