I don't know if this made it all the way round the world but I do know it made it most places at the time it happened.

Pike Mine Disaster Link

On the 19th of November 2010 a major explosions shook the Pike River Mine on the West Coast of New Zealand. 29 Miners were in the mine at the time 3.44 pm and for a long period it was hopped that they were still alive. It had just played out in the news about the Chilean miners, so hopes were high.

First Explosion

A military robot was called in and attempted to enter deep into the mine. It only made it

on the 29th of November 2010 a second explosion riped through the mine and it was then that all hope was lost, a third occurred on the 26th of November 2010 and a fourth occurred on the 28th of November 2010.

It has been full on since then with attempts to put out fires at the mine and make it safe to enter to recover remains.

Ventilation Fire

It has just been announced that the mine will be sealed as it is still too hard to go in and unsafe. Sad times for the coast.

Out of the 29 men lost their ages ranged from 17 to 62. 2 men who were working in the shaft managed to make there way out after being knocked unconscious. There were 16 miners and 13 contractors in the mine. Since the mine sealing announcement the family of the 16 miners feel that it is an appropriate place for the miners to lie. the family of the 13 contractors want their men back.

The debate continues.
