Hello Good Men,

Here's some examples and clarifications for purchasing in the campaign.

Bit 'o background

So many scenarios and quick battles involve 'high-octane' units.
Special forces, cutting edge equipment, and heavies.

However, in a typical operation like the one this campaign is based on,
(where there's a few divisions involved), there were maybe a couple hundred
unusual (lend-lease for example) or rare or heavy hitters present.

But there were thousands of the common vehicles, and most of the infantry were your average riflemen.
Grunts, who probably had reasonable training and had seen a bit of combat.
In each squad or crew, there might be some fresh green troops, and some veterans, but it evens out.

That is what I was aiming for with this campaign - to see the numerous everyday majority in action.
That why the baseline for purchasing will always be:

- Zero rarity
- Regular experience only
- Max motivation High
- Max leadership +1

A tip on buying accurately

What I did when playing in Nathangun's campaign, was I highlighted the purchasing rules,
copied the text, pasted it into a text document, and printed it...so I could read it as I was buying.

But hey, for those of you without a printer, alt-tab'ing out of the game to consult the rules on the forum can work just as well.

It might be worth jotting down notes, like how many points you have for each unit.

For reference, I will post the purchasing rules below, so I can reference it as I go.

Purchase procedure for multiple companies

Spend the points allotted for your first company. Rename the top unit with your counter’s Rgt/Bn/Co number.
Spend points on the next company, making sure not to exceed their purchase points. Rename the first unit in the new company. Repeat for each company.

On occasion, you may have a ‘free’ unit or small group to add to your attack/defence (GM awarded).
If this is the case, only add the free stuff after you have made all your normal purchases.

PURCHASING EXAMPLE 1

So let's look at a purchasing situation.

Let's say that there's 2 Axis units (an infantry and an assault gun armored) attacking a Soviet unit (an infantry unit).
Let's say that they've all seen some action already. The Axis AG unit is at 90%, and both infantry are sitting at 80% strength.

01 axis attacks soviet.jpg

We'll start with the Axis side.

I decide to start with the assault gun armoured unit 3-3-3.
It's 90% strength. Checking the strength table, we see the purchase points available.
1350 for armour, and 900 for infantry. I note it down somewhere (on my beer coaster).

100% / 1500 pts / 1000 pts
90% / 1350 pts / 900 pts
80% / 1200 pts / 800 pts
70% / 1050 pts / 700 pts
60% / 900 pts / 600 pts
50% / 750 pts / 500 pts

From the purchasing rules, I also know this:
If AG, must buy from Sturmgeschutz Brigade 44 (31 StuG). Rarity zero. Only StuG III (Mid).
Panzergrenadier Battalion 44A Motorized. Rarity zero.

So in CMRT, I start by clicking 'Armor Only', and then I buy the Sturmgeschutz Brigade 44 (31 StuG).
I click on the purchased unit on the right, and then at the bottom I select Experience - Regular, Motivation - Normal, Fit, and 0 Leadership.
I click on 'Assault Gun' and then choose 'StuG IIIG (mid)' (the early version has rarity).
I click on 'Assault Support' and choose 'StuG III' and 'StuG IIIG (mid)'. No rarity, good.
Now is a great time to rename the unit, to '3-3-3 AG'.

02 AG type.jpg

Now I start to carve off companies from the brigade.
Down to 1 company is still way too many points, so I carve off 2 platoons. STILL too many points.
So I delete the brigade HQ vehicle. So now I've got a company HQ StuG, and a platoon of 3 StuGs.

I'm at 1186 points, which is under the 1350 I have available to spend. Now what?
Looking at the 'single vehicles' list, I see a Panther (rarity zero but not allowed), I see a Panzer (but I'm an assault gun unit), and StuGs (can't afford). Nothing there for me.
So I select my purchased unit, and start tweaking their stats.
I set everyone's motivation to 'high'. Now I'm at 1210 points.
I set everyone's leadership to +1. Now I'm at 1266 points.
I still have 84 points. Going back to the single vehicles list, I buy a Kubelwagon for fun (it's a mobile beer boat).
Total points spent: 1313 (out of 1350 available, so 37 points offered up to the gods of war).
I make a note of 1313 spent.

03 StuG platoon.jpg

Now time to buy the infantry component of my AG company.
At 90% strength, I have 900 points to spend.
I click on the 'Armored Infantry' section, and purchase a Panzergrenadier Battalion 44A Motorized.
I select my newly purchased battalion and set the parameters at the bottom of the screen.
Experience Regular, Motivation High, Fit, and Leadership zero.
I then delete the bottom 3 companies, including the heavy weapons company.
I delete the battalion's HQ support team and the 2 Kubelwagons.
I delete the company HQ's 2IC team and both Kubelwagons.
I go though the entire company and delete all the remaining Kubelwagons and all the trucks.

Whew! Ok, getting close now at 1037 points. It occurs to me to rename this unit to '3-3-3 inf'
I then notice that this group has rarity! I discover by clicking at the bottom of the screen on 'Motorized Rifle' that I can select 'Panzerschreck' or 'Standard'.
I choose Standard, and rarity goes to zero. In fact, this also brings me down to 897 points.
But then I realise that there are medium mortars in the company's heavy weapons platoon.
I click on 'Medium Mortar' at the bottom, and choose 'On Map'.
I'm now 906, 6 points over. I dig deeper and discover there are a couple more trucks I don't want in the HMG sections. I delete. Now 856 points.
So I make every leader in my group +1. Now 868 points. 32 spare.
I go to the Specialist Teams section, and buy a regular scout. 898 spent, and job done:

04 arm inf.jpg

So now I consider my other company counter, my 1-2-3.
They are at 80% strength, so checking the strength table for infantry, I see that I have 800 points to spend.

100% / 1000 pts
90% / 900 pts
80% / 800 pts
70% / 700 pts
60% / 600 pts
50% / 500 pts

I start by buying my Grenadier Battalion 44. I click on it, and set the parameters - Experience Regular, Motivation High, Fit and 0 Leadership.
I rename it 1-2-3.

I start by deleting the bottom 3 companies, including the heavy weapons company.
I delete the battalion HQ, the support team, and their 2 Kubelwagons.
Nice. A full company left, at 732 points.

I then notice there is rarity. Ah! A Panzerscreck team is attached to each platoon.
Delete them. Now 618 points. No rarity. Well now I've got 182 points left.
I make the company leader and all the platoon leaders +1. 629 points. 171 left.

I decide to 'revive' the heavy weapons company.
I delete everything except the 3rd mortar platoon.
In the 3rd platoon, I only keep the 1st Section.
I click on them, and down below I choose Medium Mortar - On Map, and Mortar - Medium Mortar.
Still some points left. I revive the heavy weapons machine gun platoon, and delete all but the 1st section (HMG and leader).
Sitting at 799. Perfect.

05 inf.jpg

All Axis units purchased.
However. My CO has also assigned battalion mortars from both units.
Mortar Section Medium (2 x 81mm) + 1 Forward Observer Team
I add them now. I go to the Artillery section and purchase 2 of the Mortar Section Medium (both Regular experience).
I go back to my Armored Infantry and buy a regular Forward Observer for them from Specialist Teams.
I then do the same for my 1-2-3 infantry.

I take a moment to double check stuff. Points spent. No rarity. Have I renamed each parent unit?
Okay, good to go.
When it is time to set up my units, I will need to keep each company strictly to its named setup zone.
It will be easy to spot, since I have renamed the parent units.

Let's have a look at just how far you could push things with purchasing.

Continuing with the example above, the Soviet infantry unit is defending, and is at 80% strength.

Looking at the purchasing table, we see:

100% / 1000 pts
90% / 900 pts
80% / 800 pts
70% / 700 pts
60% / 600 pts
50% / 500 pts

..so we have 800 points to spend.

And to recap, the rules are:
- Zero rarity
- Regular experience only
- Max motivation High
- Max leadership +1

But the rules also say that a minimum of 50% of your points must be spent on the parent unit.
I'm going to push things as much as possible here, to see if I can piss off the GM. :giggle:

Checking the purchasing rules, I note that the Soviets "must buy from Rifle Battalion 43 or 44"
I go ahead and purchase the 44 battalion.
I select it on the right, and set the parameters down below.
Experience Regular, Motivation Normal, Fit, Leadership zero.
Just to the right of that is the unit specifications.
I click Heavy Machinegun and choose Maxims.
I click the Antitank Platoon and choose 45mm (because I can see the 57mm have rarity).
I click Machinegun and choose SG43's.
I click Medium Mortar and choose On Map (only battalion allocated extras can be off-map)

Sitting at over 2000 points.
I delete the second and third company. 1111 points.
I delete the second mortar platoon. 994 points.
Hmm. Facing Stugs, I delete the 45mm light Antitank platoon. 871 points.
I look into the rifle company, and delete the AT rifle platoon with their peashooters.
I delete the machinegun section too (I've still got the HMG company). 820 points.
I delete the 3rd rifle platoon. 684 points.
I delete the 2nd rifle platoon! 548 points.
I delete the battalion commander (he's taking a dump back at HQ).
I delete one of my HMG platoons. Down to 445.
I delete the company sniper and one mortar. Down to 404 points.
I can feel the GM raising his eyebrows high. Satisfying. :devilish:

I'm down to just above 50% of my points for the parent unit.
I have a rifle platoon (who are nervously wondering where everyone went), a platoon of 3 HMG's, and a platoon of 2 mortars.

NOW I go shopping. I go from Formations, to Specialist Teams.
Hmm. I can't go over 800 points. Let's go crazy.
I could get 4 x 76mm ATG's. Nice.
Or maybe 17 flamethrower teams! That'd be sure to tick off my opponent. :sneaky:
I decide to get a mix. I get 2 x 76mm ATG, 4 x tank hunter teams, and 3 x flamethowers.
779 points, with 21 offered up to the gods of war.
But wait! Our company sniper has returned after visiting the local farmer's daughter. 788 points spent.

Before I put this puppy to bed, I buy 3 lots of foxholes because I'm defending.
Plus any other extras like GM allocated free stuff, or CO allocated artillery.
Job done.
