Took these pics today. The frigate was built in 1860 and fought at the battle of Helgoland in 1864. Took 18 direct hits, one of which killed 11 sailors and wounded 10. One of the wounded officers kept fighting for an hour with a shell fragment sticking out of his head. He later died when it was removed.

The pics of the cannonball hits are from a later reconstruction. The bell damage is from a hit sustained in the battle though.

'Jylland' was the last wooden battleship built in Denmark. She had sails but also had a steam engine. Her propeller could be hoisted out of the water to reduce drag.

Interesting. I bet the ship was cutting edge technology when built. But then technology moved away from wood. Sounds like the Frigate served its intended purpose for Denmark. Thanks for posting.

Yes, it definitely served its purpose. The battle was won, and the frigate went on to sail to many corners of the world, including several trips to the Danish West Indies - now called the US Virgin Islands. Later, the ship was made the personal ship of the king when he went on diplomatic trips. But that's another story.
