In 1943 the U.S. has asked Stalin to allow the U.S. Air Force heavy bombers flying over Soviet territory to bomb targets in eastern Germany and the Balkans, so they will not return to England or Italy.
In early 1944, the Soviet Union has allocated for this three airfields in the Ukraine in Poltava region: in Poltava, Mirhorod and Piryatin."
