The FGM has been running on the same foundations for quite a while now and over that time with my tinkering year by year I have accumulated quite a lot of junk on the system (databases etc) that really crap up the back room at FGM.
Database errors and such like meaning that I have to disable features to even get the site running.
Now I have noticed the site slowing down and getting a bit creaky… despite me running regular updates the foundations are groaning under all the crap I have tried out over the years.
What I want to do is a fresh install of the forum software but to keep all the stuff the members have put in… posts, albums pictures etc.
Im asking for your help?
Are we able to do that.
A recent issue with the tabs has screwed up the system and in my hands at present it’s a ticking timebomb.
I have run daily back ups (230MB) of the DB so the member info etc and post info should be in there somewhere to rescue.
How do I proceed?
I have asked Zaraza and FredRocker but will also post on the forum. Any and all help greatfully accepted.
I reall yneed techie types... hopefully Zaraza or Fred can assist as those guys know their way around.. I just bumble about and hope not to break anything.
Guys I have had a hell of a day with the forum software crapping up resulting in me working on it all day. With my time available to run these continual updates to the frankly dodgy software at a premium I am seriously considering migrating everything to new forum software. After looking high and low for a suitable replacement I am seriously considering migrating to Xenforo forum software.
This will not be cheap however and may take me a bit of time to rustle up the suitable funds to...
A) Purchase the software.
B) Pay for assistance in relation to a professional programmer to assist in the whole transfer process.
Our fighting fund from donations will cover some of the process and I will attempt to finance the rest. If you wish to assist donate towards the war chest by using the paypal link on the homepage.
I have researched it quite a bit and the Xenforo software is very well thought of in the online community.
Its been a number of years since we last looked at forum upgrades etc but I think the amount of work that goes in to making vbulletin stable does not make it viable anymore.
The main problem is keeping up to date with the basically fortnightly security updates etc which in some cases destroy functionality for items I have programmed/installed. Xenforo is easy to use but lacks some features that vb has but on the whole is a refreshing software which I believe is better suited to the end user (you). I will keep you up to date on developments as I look further into this.
I am a firm believer in putting my money where my mouth is, and since I spout off here more than anywhere else, you can count me in for monetary assistance. What kind of money are we talking here?
To be honest I can cover purchasing the software using club funds and squaring the rest myself. If enough users stick in a couple of £\$ we should be fine. Thats if guys are willing to help financially. Im not demanding anything to be honest but it would help.
The software will probably cost about $180. The profesional help I need to look into.
There is no doubt that you could handle it all on your own, so that's not the issue here.
This is how I look at it...I derive immense pleasure from the camaraderie and friendship I find here at FGM. If it were to go away, my world would be a bit emptier for it. To avoid that experience, I pledge $50 on the 1st of June via PayPal.
Many hands make for easy work, so what say the rest of you Few Good Men?
Is there some place that we can look at this Xenforo forum? May be another site you might know about? I am looking into what I can scrape together to assist Bootie. I will make it ASAP sir.
Just google xenforo. The forums are plain but apparently run very smooth and have great reviews. Im at work just now but will spend today doing a lot of digging into all alternatives. If anyone is aware of alternatives please do contact me.
Xenforo has a vbulletin importer which is very good apparently.
I will post up some links later we can discuss this as a community as it will affect us all and we can choose the best way to proceed.
