Probably the theory is that those 4 points of contact is a lot smaller than a foot, so the chances of stepping on a mine are much reduced, on the other hand the ground pressure is much higher so if those bits of metal do hit a mine, kaboom

I think that too.
Plus, looks like he has some protection on his feet, so he has better chances to live and keep his legs.
Many landmines are designed to disable victim, not to kill.
