An Army doctor who disobeyed orders to deploy to Afghanistan because he questioned President Barack Obama's eligibility to be commander in chief was sentenced by a jury Thursday to six months in a military prison and will be dismissed from the Army.

The military jury spent nearly five hours deliberating punishment for Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin after three days of court martial proceedings at Fort George G. Meade.

Lakin was convicted of disobeying orders - he had pleaded guilty to that count - and missing a flight that would have gotten him to his eventual deployment. An army commander, Maj. Gen. Karl Horst, still has to approve the sentence returned by the jury and has the option to reduce it. Lakin could then appeal.

In online videos posted on YouTube, Lakin aligned himself with the so-called "birther" movement that questions whether Obama is a natural-born citizen, as the Constitution requires for presidents, and said he was inviting his own court martial.

But Lakin said Wednesday that despite his questions about Obama's eligibility for office, he acknowledged that the Army was the wrong place to raise his concerns about Obama, asked to keep his job and said he was now willing to deploy.

"I don't want it to end this way," Lakin told the jury Wednesday. "I want to continue to serve."

On Thursday morning, a military prosecutor asked the jury to sentence Lakin to at least two years in a military prison and to dismiss him from the service.

Lakin's defense attorney, Neal Puckett, asked the jury to be lenient, describing the 17-year veteran as compassionate and patriotic but also naive in trusting the poor advice of a previous civilian lawyer.

Interesting enough someone like that becomes an officer in the first place. He may be a doctor but he very obviously was in combat and has seen his fair share of business so should know what is expected of a soldier... very odd.

You may not like the war. You may not like your leaders or your fellow soldiers....

But you signed up, you have a duty, and the bottom line is that you are soldier.
I think the life of a soldier presents a unique predicament. On the one hand, yes, you signed up for duty and should have known what to expect. You're told to deploy and you should be expected to do so, regardless of whether or not you want to go.

On the other hand, the fact that soldiers do what they're told is what enabled many of the most horrific crimes against humanity in the history of the world. Might we have been better off if large numbers of German troops had just said "Sorry. I signed up to serve, but I'm not going to invade an innocent country" or "Yes, I joined the SS, but I refuse to gas Jews simply because it's an order"?

I'm not saying that I support this particular man's stand (especially since he is questioning the authority of the leader, rather than the cause itself). I just think it's interesting to ponder.

One other thing that I thought about when I read this article is the whole "birther" thing. I think it's been made abundantly clear that Obama was born in Hawaii. How anyone can deny that, I have no idea. But I read a VERY interesting article early this week that questions whether Hawaii is actually a part of the U.S. (Again, I'm not a birther and don't question Obama's birthplace, but I think this is interesting and relevant). Apparently, Hawaii was seized and its government was replaced against United States law. In essence, the government that aligned itself with the U.S. was the result of a coup and not a legitimate government according to U.S. law. There's actually a suit going on right now that, if successful, would force the U.S. to recognize Hawaii's sovereignty as an independent nation. I wish I had the link handy to post, but I'd imagine that a Google search would turn up something.

So if his unit had been deployed while Bush was President he wouldn't have had a problem? This guy is just a moron. Of course if you are ordered to do something that conflicts with your moral convictions you should refuse and have the courage to accept the consequences of your actions. This guy appears to be doing nothing but simply grandstanding in order to get a little time in the spotlight. Now that he is face to face with the consequences of his actions, he is very quick to recant.

I hope they lock him up.
