Those .58 Minie Balls were something else. Not only would they leave huge entry/exit wounds, they would completely shatter and splinter any bone they hit. That's why you see a lot of those guys with large portions of their bone removed. Growing up in the South, Civil War re-enactments are something of a tradition and I've attended a bunch of them. Visiting the field hospital always sent a shiver down my spine. The surgeon's tools looked more like a butcher's kit than anything else. I always thought the bone saw was the most intimidating looking instrument:
