The great actor Ernest Borgnine (1917/2012) as Lt. Commander McHale in "McHale's Navy" in 1963.
E. Borgnine joined the US Navy in Oct 1935, after graduating from high school, until he was honorably discharged in October of 1941. In Jan 1942, he reenlisted in the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During WWII he patrolled the Atlantic Coast on an antisubmarine warfare ship, the USS Sylph (PY-12).

He was one of The Wild Bunch.

I was never much of a fan of his as I always thought he wildly overacted everything he was in.
Perhaps that was part of his charm?
But "The Wild Bunch?" Oh my! Absolutely.

He did win an Oscar for best actor in a leading role. Just sayin’.

80 years ago... V-J Day celebrations in Hawaii when the news is announced of the surrender of Japan - Aug 14, 1945.

My brother lives up in the State of Rhode Island.

“Rhode Island is the only state that celebrates Victory Day, which commemorates the end of World War II with Japan's surrender. The holiday is officially known as Victory Day, not V-J Day, though it is often referred to as such.”
