Beirut Explosion

I've been following this story as well. Like the rest of you, I was really surprised that grain silo stood up so well to the force of the blast.

There's a video recorded by a guy on the grain silo just before the whole thing went up. He managed to send it to his family in the moments before the big explosion.

It's really fortunate that it happened out on the docks. If that storehouse had been located in the city itself, the damage would have been extreme. As it is, most of what was destroyed were storehouses.

Nemesis is right, grain elevators are built with a lot of rebar webbing and concrete for the reason he stated, dust explosions. They are built to keep the explosion within the structure, so they are in essence a grain bunker to protect folks outside in the event of a grain dust explosion. So I am not surprised one bit that the grain elevator remnants are there, but I gotta say that the explosion that occurred was probably way more powerful than a grain dust explosion, although the last one that exploded in Kansas seriously wrecked the elevator, at least the blower shed on the top. The walls held, but they were cracked....
