~Sure~ I pride myself on being PC-savvy,. Please instruct me on the proper way to install this mod...

From memory, you over-write the existing files with the new ones, but I can't remember what the folder is called (should be easy enough to find).
To avoid a muck-up or regrets, you could make a copy of the folder with the original graphics files.
Some mods came with several options, named slightly differently (eg. a, b and c). You needed to rename the file you want to use, so that it over-writes the original.

The change in the new engine (CM2) is that you can place a folder in your mods folder and leave the originals intact.
If you change your mind, you just remove the folder with the particular mod that you no longer want.
You can mix and match - for instance, you can use a mod with winter vehicles in a winter mod and then move it out or rename it when you no loner want it.

CMBO?
I don't remember how to mod a CM1 type game.
Just making sure, you're not referring to CMBN or a CM2 game?

You have to note the BMP numbers for Your wanted mod. Then search the same BMP numbers in the BMP folder of CMBO and make a backup. Then just overwrite the files in the folder with the files of the mod. I think that was the way.
