ASLers will recall that many scenarios provided options to alter the play balance of scenarios. Examples include providing one side with additions support weapons, or reducing same. CM's has inherent settings to adjust game difficulty (Iron, Elite, Warrior, Veteran, Basic Training) but these are not quite the same thing as game balance. Iron is the nearest thing to historical. The other settings simply degrade historical conditions such as providing the player more knowledge of enemy positions than they would have in real life.

A more elegant way to adjust play balance for those of us who like to play at the Iron (or Elite) level, is to use the Scenario Editor. Here you can make fine or gross adjustments to the play balance. I call these 'Level One' and 'Level Two' adjustments. Level One adjusts parameters such as artillery ammunition or troop experience and/or quality but makes no changes to the general structure of the scenario. Level Two changes alter numbers of things, such as reducing a company from full to 80% strength. These are substantive changes to the scenario design. REMEMBER to save your altered scenario under a different name such as 'old name ALT'.

So next time you find yourself playing a really imbalanced scenario - rather than grieve about it - get your hands dirty in the Scenario Editor. ;)
